Immigration protests get ugly in Fremont

Six people are arrested as fight breaks out between border security group and International Socialist Organization By Lisa Fernandez MEDIANEWS The national debate on illegal immigration has erupted into fisticuffs and legal trouble in an unlikely seat of political activism: a suburban street corner in Fremont.

For three months, a group of seniors, war veterans, blue-collar workers and students has taken to the corner of Fremont Boulevard and Mowry Avenue every other Friday night to decry illegal immigration. But the rallies of the East Bay Coalition for Border Security, as the 30 or so people are called, have drawn ire from members of the International Socialist Organization and Green Party -- mostly idealistic 20-somethings who drive from San Francisco, Berkeley and Santa Cruz to counterprotest.

We are out there, a small group of middle-class Americans, carrying signs that say, 'Wake Up America,' and 'No Amnesty,' and this international group of socialists just comes and attacks us," said Mary Washington, 60, of Union City and spokeswoman for the border security group, which formed in May.

But Michael Smith, 27, an ISO spokesman studying geography at UC Berkeley, says the border security group is not simply a collection of "old, hapless elderly Republicans out there protesting illegal immigration."

Fremont police Detective Bill Veteran, who witnessed the scene, said a small group of pro-immigrant Fremont teens started the trouble, egged on by chants from ISO members. Police say at least four of the group were gang members.

That was my take as well. I also commend the sixty-somethings for protesting. Lord, if I lived in, California or Texas, I'm afraid I would have been protesting a long time ago!!

By the way, I don't think people have forgotten about the immigration thing at all.

If anything, I think the mess in the Middle East has made them more concerned. Every time these Islamofacists do some outrageously violent thing, Americans realize just how vulnerable they are.

Lieberman's loss should also give them pause.

You did fine. There's nothing wrong with the folks protesting against illegal immigration. This was a carefully designed effort at intimidation. I hope the older group sticks with it. Kudos to them.

Evidently they're doing a great job if the socialists are this ticked off.

Too fricken bad lefties...

Police say at least four of the group were gang members.

What you are witnessing is one of the first skirmishes of the Second Civil War. If you look at what happened in the Balkans and former Soviet Union, criminal gangs are often the nuclei for ethnic militias. Latino gang-bangers are purported to be joining the US military to get military training.

If the out-of-control immigration situation is not stopped NOW, things will be a bloody mess by 2025. And the blame will rest on the heads of the greedy and corrupt politicians, businessmen and citizens who put the profits that come from cheap labor ahead of patriotism.

(Boy, I'm sounding mighty Old-Testament-Prophet-of-Doom this morning, aren't I? But it's the truth. We're condeming our kids to a life of violence and misery because we're too lazy to cut our own lawns.)

Excellent post and I couldn't agree more, except I don't think "La Revolucion" will wait until 2025. We are already beginning to see what happens when the "peaceful" illegal protestors and their supporters are opposed. Until now, their massive demonstrations have gone unopposed. If that were to change, however, I am certain that, frankly, all hell would break lose all across this country. While do and would hate to see anyone hurt, mass protests are planned again for Labor Day weekend and I certainly do hope that counter protestors will show. IMO we need an 'in your face' movement rather than relying on emails and phone calls.

And you're right about the military....see this article and the photo gallery!:

No, these are the diciples of peace. Please don't get the wrong idea...

These folks are members of the enemy underground. They should be prosectured or expelled.

"the first skirmishes of the Second Civil War"

While civil war is overly dramatic, there is a looming conflict.

The worker to retiree ratio is currently about 3 to 1. As the boomers retire, it will drop to 2 to 1.

No doubt the young will resent the high taxes and some will blame the old people for it.

No doubt the young will resent the high taxes and some will blame the old people for it.

While the young AMERICANS will grumble, at least they'll know the taxes are going to support their own parents and will probably understand paying high taxes is better than having Mom & Pop in their guest room. The young IMMIGRANTS, on the other hand, won't be so understanding. Since they'll be sending money home to their own families, they won't like paying to support old gringos, too.

I hope "Second Civil War" is overly dramatic, but the fact is that America typically undergoes a major crisis every 4th generation. We are due for a major upheaval soon.

According to your own post, it wasn't just seniors. It was "a group of seniors, war veterans, blue-collar workers and students."
