How many times does this have to happen before a serious change occurs in the way we do things and most importantly recognize it for the problem that it is?

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and its subcontractors need better security, but it's not going to happen. The bureaucracy is just too big, mismanaged, and incompetent.

What with the Internet and other networks, I don't see why the DVA's techies have to physically take data out of the building.

There's a manager, somewhere is the technical hierarchy of the DVA, that needs to be relieved of his or her duties.

Maybe it should just be news when a PC gets stolen that DOES NOT have private veterans on it...

"The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and its subcontractors need better security, but it's not going to happen. The bureaucracy is just too big, mismanaged, and incompetent."

Whats ironic is that thru Sarbanes Oxley the govt has forced truly oppressive standards down to business. If we forced the govt to pass the same standards this probably wouldn't happen.

"I really need to start using /sarc on all my sarcastic posts."

Either that or I need to have my coffee before posting. I missed that.

I think there is a misprint on the desktop. Other sources are reporting it is a laptop.

Still, there is a trend beginning. Companies/Organizations/Government that use laptop computing need to be thinking about security if they have not already.

Think about this - what is 38K veterans' names and other personal information worth to marketers? That already would be worth some pretty good money... BUT

What would 38K sets of info be worth to someone with FAR more ugly intentions (like ID theft)?
