Actually, I think that the Left secretly loves Mel, because he's become the perfect weapon to demonstrate "Christian hypocrisy" with. Never mind that he's lived his entire life as a good and decent man and is a devout Catholic....no, forget that. And forget also that his two or so sentences that they are all in a lather over occurred when he was blind drunk and out of his head. Forget all that.....they LOVE Mel because he's RELIGIOUS and he GOES TO CHURCH and he BELIEVES IN GOD and so one bad moment in his life can be used to accuse ALL religious people of hypocrisy and of being anti Semitic and completely evil. I think that the Left loves him to pieces.
