Israel gives army a free hand as Lebanon seeks withdrawal

By Patrick Bishop

(Filed: 08/08/2006)

Diplomatic efforts to stop the war in Lebanon failed to slow the bloodshed yesterday as at least 32 civilians were killed in Israeli air raids.

Air raids on a crowded area of Beirut that had so far escaped the violence killed at least eight people

Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, said no limits had been placed on the army's actions and leaflets warned Lebanese living south of the Litani river not to remain outdoors after 10pm.

Targets in south and east Lebanon were bombed and aid agencies said it was too dangerous to deliver humanitarian aid to the south.

Last night air raids on a crowded area of south Beirut that had previously escaped the violence killed at least eight people. In the southern border village of Houla, 65 people, including 35 children, were pulled alive from a ruined building.

Despite the ferocity of the attacks Hizbollah continued to fire rockets into northern Israel, injuring five people.

Three Israeli soldiers were killed in ground operations and a pilotless drone operated by Hizbollah was shot down.

The violence seemed certain to continue with the Israeli army promising to maintain the offensive until it had crushed Hizbollah. Gen Alon Friedman, the commander of Israel's northern military region, said: "We are continuing operations to clean up southern Lebanon and to meet the goals we have set ourselves regardless of any possible ceasefire."

Hizbollah has said it will not stop its rocket attacks before Israel withdraws.

The international push to stop the fighting made little headway yesterday and a United Nations Security Council ceasefire resolution is unlikely to be voted on until tomorrow or Thursday.

Agreement was delayed after Lebanon, supported by the Arab League, claimed that the first draft was one-sided and favoured Israel.

The wording calls for a "full cessation of hostilities", but makes no explicit mention of an Israeli withdrawal and implies that defensive operations would be permitted.

Fouad Siniora, Lebanon's prime minister, backed by Arab governments, said the resolution must contain a demand for an Israeli withdrawal, an exchange of prisoners and evacuation of border land occupied by Israel.

He is seeking cabinet approval for the dispatch of 15,000 Lebanese soldiers along with a 4,000 UN force to the border area immediately after a ceasefire is in place and the Israelis have left.

The only way to victory with peace is through Total War. That is where you advance on line and kill or destroy everything in front of you. If you take fire from somewhere, you use overwhelming firepower to destroy the area, and then you resume the advance. Prisoners are kept & interrogated until the end of hostilities. Civilians may be interred for their own protection and sustenance. Pacification is achieved by controlling the food, water, transportation, communication, police, jobs, etc.

Hmmm, anyone making demands is not petitioning for a ceasefire, they are demanding a surrender of their opponents.

Needs a bit more pounding, I'd say.

"at least 32 civilians were killed in Israeli air raids"

If this number is correct, it'll be the first honest one to date. All the rest were bogus, made-up death toll numbers. It wouldn't surprise me, after the media is called on this to come back and report, "After further investigation, the total is 1 dead and 31 hopefuls."

Hizbollah has said it will not stop its rocket attacks before Israel withdraws.

And they won't stop rocket attacks after Israel withdraws. They wouldn't stop rocket attacks before Israel entered Lebanon. As a matter of fact, Hizbollah won't stop rocket attacks until they're all dead. Israel must kill them all.

If there are any true civilians (perhaps the Christian communities) it's unfortunate that you may die, but the killer rockets are coming from your yard so get the f'n hell out of the way or help stop the rocket attacks on truly innocent civilians (Israelites).

Anything less than this is surrender. Anything less than this is French.

Can anyone think of when defensive operations would not be permitted?

You guys pull back behind the line, and when we come charging at you with our swords and guns, you drop all your weapons and raise your hands high in the air so we can kill all of you. O.K.?

Unfortunately, the Lebanese military is riddled with Hezbos as is their officer corps and political organizations. They couldn't keep the Hezbos out of the south up until this point so why shoould anyone believe that they could do it now. THEY DON'T WANT TO! Also, don't give them any prisoners. The Hezbos committed an act of war to obtain their hostages and should be given nothing more than their lives for returning them. The land is not "occupied" as the Israelis don't mean to set up shop there, just to make sure the Hezbos are driven back and hopefully into the ground. Screw Lebanon, they are reaping what they have sown. Where's the fire-bombers?

I believe absolutely none of the casualty reports. Lebanon is inflating the civilian death numbers by not including any of the Hezbos killed because they belnd in to the population. I feel for the true innocents but this is war and war is hell.

Sounds like we have our basic 2 option scenario:
A--Eliminate all the rockets
B--Eliminate all the terrorists firing the rockets.5678

I'm going for option B.

But, but, what about option C??

There is NO option C.

Problem with
A-they can make new rockets
B-they can make new terrorists

Option C combines options A and B and also eliminates all the terrorists' enablers. Do that or ask for problems later.
