Page 1 above the fold in yesterday's New York Times featured a photo (below) by our new acquaintance Adnan Hajj.
I suspect that not all is as it appears to be in the photo, and somehow doubt that Times readers will ever learn why that might be the case.
The Reuters caption reads: "A severely wounded Lebanese civilian is carried away on a stretcher at Maameltain bridge, after it was targeted by Israeli air strikes, in the north of Beirut August 4, 2006. (Adnan Hajj/Reuters)" (Thanks to reader David Butz.)
Nothing cracks me up like empty flip-flops in the sand.
I don't think this is altered. I do not think you are seeing the end of the support post in the stretcher. I think it's a gap in the material and a cutout/rivet in the post.
Secondly, the focus seems to match on the casualty himself and the surrounding materials. I do think the stretcher itself is pretty ratty and busted up.
I do suspect this is a staged photo, but aren't most from this region suspect of that?
I agree that this is staged but not altered.
Green Helmet Dude seems to show up on lots of photos, particularly those that require corpses for effect. There are numerous photos of him at Qana proudly displaying apperently long-dead children. He also shows up north of Beruit and was apparently photographed in the incident in 1996 in Qana where civilians were said to be killed by Israelis.
Many of the photos were by Hajj Adnan who was fired 3 days ago for fraud by Reuters for doctoring photos to exaggerate damage, ( which didn't stop the New York Times from using his picture on page 1 yesterday).
Little Green Footballs blog has the details.
This severely wounded man has been dead long enough for rigor mortis to set in.

Here are lots of versions of these pics from Adnan...
The green Helmet Guy is everywhere.
Sometimes he is the director, the victim, or the rescuer...
The Green Helmet Guy needs to get a better make up crew if he is going to play the victim's role.
Second, he is better as a director or rescue man ( with clean hands ) posting for the repeated camera shots...
The Green Helmet Guy is not a good actor.
He should go to acting school for some training.
The green Helmet Guy is likely in many different pictures with many different outfits...
We will likely find many more.
Most of us agree.
"Sorry, but now we are out to bust the NY Times for running this as a front-page photo."
Neither pre-staging a photoshot nor photshopping later is acceptable. The NY Times has an moral ( and legal ? ) obligation to disclose these facts.
They do not and will not be fair and balanced as long as Pinch is there.
IMHO.
We love our children. They use their children.
Any questions???
The guy on the stretcher is holding onto the support pole running the length of the stretcher, which is visible at the far left of the image. There are two handles reaching to the right above the man's head. The man holding the stretcher on the man's top right is visible. Part of the hand holding the other stretcher handle is visible in the far right near the bottom. I would assume there was a similar handle on the other two corners of the stretcher.
This is clearly a stage managed propaganda opp as evidenced by the other photographer visible in the background. The other photographer is probably Hajj's AP counterpart Kevin Frayer.
Journalists or helmeted Special Olympics rejects. Guy on the right has some sort of toy helmet on.
Is that a backwards 1950's football helmet ?
Another staged media event.
