IDF ditches plans to reach Litani River

After completing the creation of a security zone in southern Lebanon and with diplomatic pressure mounting, the IDF, senior defense officials revealed Sunday, did not plan to move ground troops northwards towards the Litani River - a line initially named as the IDF's final destination in this current ground incursion.

Meanwhile Sunday, five Golani soldiers were wounded after a bomb went off when they stormed a home in the Lebanese town of Mahbeeb. The wounded soldiers were evacuated to safety and then taken to Rambam Hospital in Haifa for further medical treatment.

Five other soldiers were wounded, one moderately and four lightly, during heavy clashes between IDF reservists and Hizbullah guerillas in the southern Lebanese village of Ras al-Baida. The troops from Brigade 609 killed over 35 Hizbullah gunmen since Friday and succeeded in destroying at least three Katyusha rocket launchers hidden in the village. Another soldier suffered moderate wounds when an anti-tank rocket hit his D-9 bulldozer near the village of Kila, west of Metulla. IDF troops took three Hizbullah guerrillas captive during operations in southern Lebanon overnight Saturday.

The fighting that continued on Sunday took place in the 20 some villages IDF troops had taken up positions in over the weekend as they finished recreating the 10-kilometer-deep security zone Israel held during its 18-year presence in Lebanon which ended in 2000.

This is not good news. The Israelis are losing their fighting spirit.

They recreated the security zone. Israel is back this time... to stay for good. The international force will never materialize.

While the IDF initially had planned to send troops north to the Litani River - a line from which officials said it would be easier to prevent rocket attacks - high-ranking military sources told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday that due to the mounting diplomatic pressure the plan had been deferred for the time being.

An incursion up to the Litani - some 30 km from Israel - would require, a high-ranking source in the Northern Command said Sunday, the insertion of an entire new division into Lebanon. The IDF already has eight brigades on the ground in Lebanon made up of 10,000 troops. The source said that it would take several days to reach the Litani.

Not suprising with the defeatist Ohlmert in power. They'll never be effective with that guy conducting the war. Also, the refusal to advance after the katusha rocket attack that killed 11 Israeli soldiers will be seen by Hezbollah as a victory for them.

They may reactivate the plan but as noted they'd have to bring a division to push forward to the Litani. And until the ceasefire picture becomes more definite its in a "holding" position. But no one in Israel really expects much to come of. There is no agreement on whether to deploy an international force, much less than on its composition and powers. And even before that, there is disagreement over whether a ceasefire should precede or follow an Israeli withdrawal. I expect nothing to ultimately come of those efforts.

And Israel was going to cease air strikes. Could be that Israel has learned that lying to the press is good military strategy. The Islamofascists and Communists have always known this to be true.

This could be a misinformation. You are correct they do have a history of it(which is not wrong at all). Only time will tell.

Not going to the Litani makes political sense. It removes an accusation by some of the war opponents (that Israel intended to divert water from the Litani) from any consideration.

I expect Israeli forces to work to consolidate and hold positions in the 0-10 km range from the border while they conduct search and destroy missions 10-20 km from the border. Meanwhile, airstrikes will continue further forward to the Litani River.

Who listens to these crazy war opponents? These war opponents are in the United Nations who coddle people like Assad and the other nut jobs of the world. If the Israelis want to win, they need to go to the Litani or we will be talking about this a few years down the road. By that time, Hezbollah will have a nuclear weapon

Re your comment that the Israelis may be being less than truthful: The same thing occurred to me. In any case, no one is ever being quoted on the record, it's all speculation or supposedly 'inside' information. right.
Also, this 'that due to the mounting diplomatic pressure' business: WHAT MOUNTING DIPLOMATIC PRESSURE?
I honestly have no idea what this means. Does anyone really care what the UN says, or Putin, or France? What leverage do they have. Their words and disproval?

Right on! I wish he was in the PM seat, he'd have taken off the gloves the first day and the conflict would probably have been long over by now.
