Mexico calling on U.S. to stem weapons trade
Houston Chronicle/AP ^ | Aug. 5, 2006 | MARK STEVENSON

Posted on 08/06/2006 4:50:58 PM PDT by SwinneySwitch

MEXICO CITY - Mexico's top organized crime prosecutor has called on U.S. officials to do more to halt illegal weapons trafficking to help Mexico stem a wave of bloody, drug-fueled violence.

Jose Luis Santiago Vasconcelos, in remarks Thursday, said the rising brutality of recent drug executions was due to hit men taking over cartels after their bosses were arrested.

"It's foreseeable that this type of violence will continue like this," Santiago Vasconcelos told a small group of foreign reporters, "because the Mexican government will never make any deals" with drug gangs.

"We know that there is a large amount of arms traffic ... in the United States, that they have to bring under control," Santiago Vasconcelos said. "There's this incredibly big black market that has to be controlled."

"The last time we spoke with (U.S. officials), we told them ... 'If these types of weapons weren't flowing through, they'd have to use stones to attack each other,' " he said.

He said Mexico also is troubled by increasing amounts of cocaine as well as small-scale heroin shipments arriving from Venezuelan airports.

Give us our guns back, and we'll give you your illegals back.

Deal?

What a sense of humor that guy has.

"There's this incredibly big black market that has to be controlled."

You stop the drugs and your citizens from flooding into the U.S. and then we'll talk about the gun problem you're having.

He said Mexico also is troubled by increasing amounts of cocaine as well as small-scale heroin shipments arriving from Venezuelan airports.

You'll have to talk to Hugo about that.

Hahahahahahahahaha! Now, what about that wall? BTW, we were in Austin yesterday and went shopping at Highland Mall. The kids asked why everyone was speaking Spanish. I had to explain about sanctuary cities. Then, wouldn't you know it, we found a clothing store ("Exit" or something) that, I swear, the entire inventory must have been sneaked in past customs in the back of a '52 Chevy. Of course, I HAD to look around just to make for sure. When there were labels, they were in Spanish and hardly any had sizes. Everything was $10 or less - jeans and jackets. Ball gowns were $6. The employees were all speaking Spanish and the cashiers were telling customers the totals not in English so people could understand, but in Spanish. There wasn't even the option of pushing #2 for English.

In case anyone doesn't know it, the invasion has begun and is nearly complete. Welcome to the United States of Mexico.

Many officers of the peace have been gunned down lately in Nuevo Laredo. Seeing drug runners run around with rocket launchers obviously is a concern. I would give the guy a bit of cred it for making an attempt to keep drugs from moving around, and they really do need some help. And by asking people up North to stop the traffic and profit off of this is within a normal request of friendly neighbors.

I think the last count was 65 police dead in Nuevo Laredo. I guess if you think this is humor, is this your version of humor?. But the weaponry they use is sophisticated stuff probably not allowed on the streets of your fine city. I do think the gentleman from Mexico was within his limits to ask to have these types of arms restricted and not exported to Mexico.

When they make a serious effort to control the drug trade instead of profiting from it and agree to control the flood of illegals I don't much care. Besides, I'm sure there are plenty of illegal arms to be had from other countries. Pointing the finger at the US is disingenuous.

Why, yes. I myself had fifty Mexicans in the shop just this morning and they all wanted to buy rocket launchers, but we ran out of Spanish 4473's and so they couldn't have any.

Visiting Mexican prisons I have many times heard confessions of drug lords who say that the American DEA has many agents that can be bought. As well many high ranking Mexican Army people have been compromised and have been influenced to sell the bests interests of all for private profit. I have heard this again and again from Colombians, Mexicans as well as some Americans. Drugs is everyone's war. There are some good people in every country, and there are some bad. Thanks, for helping keep balance on the pages people read, that the gentleman in Mexico is within his limits to request the American authorities to issue restraints on weapons that they allow to be exported.

I've not heard of any organized gangs of gringos sneaking automatic weapons into Mexico.

I have heard of ordinary Americans driving into Mexico with a loose shotgun shell in the bed of their pickup from a bird hunt, and being imprisoned for several years.

I would virtually guarantee that if any arms are being smuggled into Mexico from the US, it is by Mexican organized crime, not American.
