PHILADELPHIA - In May, U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha roused the anger of some in the military and on the political right by saying that American Marines had "killed innocent civilians in cold blood" in Iraq.
Now, the Western Pennsylvania Democrat - who hopes to become majority leader if his party captures the House in the fall election - finds himself under fire on two fronts as a result of his comment, which dealt with a still-unresolved incident in Haditha, Iraq, late last year in which 24 people died.
Politically, Murtha is under attack from a few of the veterans who during the 2004 presidential campaign led an assault on U.S. Sen. John Kerry's record in the Vietnam War. Their campaign - right down to images on their Web site, www.bootmurtha.com - deliberately echoes what Democrats have called the "swiftboating" of Kerry.
Legally, Murtha faces a lawsuit filed last week in federal court in Washington in which a 26-year-old Marine sergeant contends that Murtha defamed him and his unit.

Nothing makes sense in the Inky.
Add a comma after Republican and it makes it a Republican, Iraq critic, a critic of Republicans and Iraq
That was child's play for our lovely and talented Ministress of Information.
No, it would still be fuzzy.
The way I learned it, no comma between adjectives meant the 1st adjective modified the 2nd. (as in dark blue suit -- the suit was dark blue -- the dark indicates what kind of blue it was...)
But the comma means the 1st adjective and 2nd adjectives modify the noun: the dark, blue suit -- the suit was dark and it was also blue.
Someone suggested a slash -- Republican/Iraq critic. I don't really like this one either...it's still not clear whether he's a critic of Republicans or is an actual Republican himself. Hey, if the know-it-all Alan Colmes can get confused on such issues, so can anyone.
Most of these guys don't write their own headlines.
That would be even worse -- it would mean a Republican who is an Iraq Critic. Basically, the headline writer is awful.
Add another reason to the "why I hate Murtha" list. Crazy Katherine Baker Knoll, our senile "dementiated" Lt. Gov. was stalking funerals, handing out her business card to relatives, and telling people the (Fast Eddie Rendell) administration was against the war.
How any serviceperson could ever think this traitorous POS supports them is beyond my comprehension.
LOL! How YOU doin?
