Just watched MTP, and I cannot imagine a worse person for the Lieberman campaign to put forward, than Lannie Davis. It sounded to me like the old spin meister out-spun himself. The fellow representing Lamont looked credible and honest, and Lannie sounded like he was whining.
And IMHO, spinners like Lannie are exactly the people the liberal blogosphere are so upset about inside the Democratic Party. If Lamont wins the Primary, (very likly IMO) then it's a phyrrric victory for the far left. They may win the primary but the Election could easily go to the Republicans. Don't forget that Lamont's 13% is largley among Democrats only...

The United States has 18 Ohio class submarines:
The 14 Trident II SSBNs together carry around fifty percent of the total U.S. strategic warhead inventory. The exact number varies in an unpredictable and highly classified manner, below a maximum set by various strategic arms limitation treaties. Although the missiles have no pre-set targets when the submarine goes on patrol, the platform, when required, is capable of rapid targeting using secure and constant at-sea communications links. The Ohio class is the largest type of submarine ever constructed for the U.S. Navy, and internationally are second only to the Russian Typhoon class submarine in mass and size.
- 14 nuclear-powered SSBNs, each armed with 24 Trident II SLBMs; they are also known as "Trident" submarines, and provide the sea-based leg of the nuclear triad of the United States strategic deterrent forces
- 4 nuclear-powered SSGNs, each armed with 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles with conventional warheads
The Ohio class submarines were specifically designed for extended deterrence patrols. Each submarine is complemented by two crews, Blue and Gold, with each crew operating on a 100-day interval. To decrease the time in port for crew turnover and replenishment, three large logistics hatches are fitted to provide large diameter resupply and repair openings. These hatches allow sailors to rapidly transfer supply pallets, equipment replacement modules and machinery components, significantly reducing the time required for replenishment and maintenance. The class design allows the vessel to operate for 15+ years between overhauls. The boats are purported to be as stealthy at 20 knots (their cruising speed) as previous boats were at a dead crawl of 6 knots, although exact information remains classified.
The Trident II missle has 8 MIRV warheads, so it's 24 missiles x 8 warheads x 14 SSBNs = 2688 warheads available, assuming all of the ships are at sea. As you say (and MNJ has been saying) there's no doubt who will win if it comes to all out war. The issue for me is whether we will get a chance to use that overwhelming force. Like Gulliver we are currently tied down by treaties and "world opinion" and our Lillipution believe (IMHO) that they can do anything they want and we'll never really hit back. And now they either already have or will soon acquire weapons that can truly hurt us, albeit much less than we can hurt them.
My concern is that they won't realize or don't care that they'll die real fast if they try it. And if they try and we respond with all of our might what will that cost us?
If Texas were to hold an election for legalizing pot smoking, believe me, Travis County and Austin would be the only places in Texas it would pass. The same thing happened with "same sex marriage", Travis & Austin voted against the amendment banning same sex marriage.
There are many letters to the editor complaining that there are too many people in Texas who aren't "progressive enough" to see thing their way. Every writer of these letters may as well start their letters with "I hate Bush and I hate Republicans".

You're both right, Newt is an opportunist and his unprincipled factless backstabbing of the President during Katerina was a sad display on his part, as are his attacks on Condi.
What bothers me most about the governors is that they seem to be falling in behind Blanco on this, as if they constituted some sort of union, when she's basically saying the President should have "shown decisiveness" by breaking the law rather than stand for her own incompetence.
I didn't have time to read the entire article so I am not aware of WHICH governors are objecting to giving power to the President.
When you consider that every precinct, city, county, State & Federal district elect almost all their officials and judges, we have to have many elections.
It is good that we have the general elections for the politicians in DC in November along with the other elections, as that draws more voters to the polls.
I wish we had the elections for our congress critters the day after taxes are due. I feel more people would vote for the more conservative candidates.
As West Virginia and Delaware become more conservative, Maryland gets all the bluer. Since MD's already a lock for 'rats nationally, it doesn't really make much difference here. It would really be sweet to pick up a Republican seat or two in WV or DE.

I lived in Tehran for two years, including during the period of the downfall the Shah and the hijacking of the Iranian Revolution by Khomeini. You couldn't be more wrong.
The mullahs are interested in power, money, and survival. They don't have a death wish or advocate national suicide. The Iranians want nuclear weapons as an insurance policy against any future US involvement in Iran and to use it as leverage to increase their influence in the region. Overt and first use of nuclear weapons by the Iranians would result in the total destruction of the country, i.e., national suicide. It just isn't going to happen.
The danger of nuclear weapons in the hands of the Iranians is that they will give them to non-state actors and do it in such a way that it can't be traced directly back to them, thus trying to avoid any retaliation. That is the real threat and possible miscalculation. We need to abuse them of any such notion.
Newt never knows when to stop. I will join you in Iowa. If we had a Newt v McCain contest, I would have to vote for McCain.

As to Newt, I don't think he'll run as an independent. That's not his style. Actively working to be VP, National Security Advisor or Secretary of State or Defense are a different matter. I'd vote for him and even actively work for his election in the primaries, depending on who else is running. I'd definitely like him as National Security Advisor, but I don't think he'd do well overseeing the bureaucracies at either State or Defense. He's too easy to undermine in that sort of environment.
