The dispute between dominant species over shared habitat in the West is escalating.
The proposal emphasizes continued protections for endangered species, and it states that such measures "shall be directed at the offending animal" while not jeopardizing the "viability of predator populations."
The "offending animal" is the one perceived as a threat to people and livestock.
There now are more than 1,000 wolves in the Northern Rockies region.
In Idaho alone, the offspring of 35 Canadian wolves now number more than 500.
Their main prey are...deer and elk.
But they have attacked domestic animals as well...through 2005...( at least ) 588 cows and 1,422 sheep.
But that has not satisfied opponents of growing wolf populations. The "Idaho Anti-Wolf Coalition" is pushing a voter initiative that would mandate the removal of more than 500 wolves in the state's backcountry "by whatever means necessary."
Ron Gillett of Stanley, Idaho, head of the antiwolf coalition.
In fact, he says, the Forest Service proposal will make no difference because of the state's rugged terrain and topography.
What's more, says Mr. Gillett, Canadian wolves are considerably bigger than wolves that were native to Idaho, making them more of a threat to livestock and wildlife.
"There's only one way to manage Canadian wolves in Idaho," he says. "Get rid of them."
In other parts of the West, cougar populations are growing as well. In Oregon ( since ) 1994...
The state's cougar population has grown from about 3,000 to more than 5,000. The big cats have been spotted in residential areas, including near schools...
dogs, cats, and goats have been killed, and horses have been injured...

Shoot, shovel and shut up.
Just go back to the way it was 50 years ago, there was a bounty on all of the preditors.
Release the pedophiles into the wild!
It's open season!
Six Wolves kill 650 pound yearling steer
ENNIS Jim Nelson nearly had wolves at his doorstep Tuesday morning.
When feeding cattle in a nearby pasture in the Bear Creek area of the Madison Valley, Nelson was surprised to see six gray wolves feeding on a 650-pound yearling steer.
He was so close that he could have thrown a baseball at them, said his stepdaughter, Bennie Clark.
Clark said three houses are located within about 200 yards of the kill site.
The kill was right in the center of all three, she said.
That marked the fourth confirmed wolf kill in the Madison Valley in less than a week .
Were not moneyed people who can just absorb this kind of loss, said Clark. She and her husband, Gary, owned the yearling that was killed. This has a huge impact on us ... weve told Ed (Bangs) that we have to live here and want to make this work. Now were begging for help.

You know this is like the elk that are starving to death in Rocky Mountain National Park. The idiots arent smart enough to sell licenses over the counter and allow families that need the meat to hunt an animal and the state profit from it. No, they want to pay some outfit twenty million bucks to do it.
In a couple of years, Idy-hoe could easily sell 500 licenses and allow hunters to go in and shoot a wolf and make money that could be used to study the conservation level population. Betcha the enviro-weinies dont let it happen.
So, S-S-S will happen. Wanton waste as a result of bureaucracy.
Little Red Riding Hood on her way to visit Grandma or to go to kindergarten is no match for those teeth. Just wait till the first child is attacked and there will be hell to pay.
A wolf pack can do real damage.
Without self-defense ( big enough gun ), we are their lunch.
.../.../...
Your example is perfect.
The national park rangers ( with help from Congress ) could save the taxpayers alot of money, some families could feed themselves, and the herds made into a healthier balance.
It wont be long before the wolves are starving at the rate they are multiplying. They will soon eat all the other game and star wiping out herds.
Before the wolves get done, if we do not fight back, many family ranchers and farmers will be bankrupt from their livestock losses and gone, too.
Then, there are those families who depend on hunting deer, elk, moose...for food and/or a job.
Many rural communities make their annual profits and Christmas money during the hunting seasons by providing lodging, guiding...
Just plain stupid to introduce these monsters back into the wilds. For what reason?? It doesnt make sense.
In Alaska, many rural native villages depend on the moose hunts as a main food source.
The wolf packs have killed so many baby moose, that the village leaders are worried about their families.
I love hunting the "hunters".......
Send some down here (Texas) to cull the deer population. Those d*mned hoofed rodents are destroying my crops.
These bigger Canadian wolves are a problem.
The liberals ( ELF, ALF...) want to kick us working people off our lands. They hope to turn the ranches and farms into "wilderness."
Ted Turner and friends also want to continue to buy up these former working ranches at bankruptcy prices. Ted and friends will then continue to build lodges for his Hollywood friends to jet in for some "Sanctuary."
Can you get an expanded deer hunting season ?
