RICHMOND -- The campaign staff of Sen. George Allen (R) describes his Democratic opponent, James Webb, as a Hollywood elitist running a "joke" of a campaign. They call him "Junior."
Webb's team implies that Allen is a rich jock with a fondness for dude ranches and a weird middle name. They call him "Felix."
The election is more than three months away, but the two campaigns are locked in an increasingly nasty effort to characterize the other before voters form their own impressions

(A) Running for Senate re-election when a mere months later he's going to run for the 2008 Presidency
(B) Getting involved in a mud-fest with a nutjob Dim
Sounds like a real campaign of substance. /sarc
There probably were more cowboys in California in the late 1800's than Virginia. So what is the point of calling him a California cowboy?
Allen is running for reelection to retain the seat in republican hands. He is also running because if the seat fell into democrat hands it would be over for him.
Not to mention running for reelection against a tough anti war opponent who is a war hero is a good metric and a stepping stone for the presidency. When the 2008 campaign comes along, Allen can say that he is the only person on stage who has fought a tough race on the iraq war/war on terrorism in a purple state.(iraq/gwot will still be a big issue in 2008)
This race also toughens him up for the 2008 primary/race since he will be the only candidate who has run a legtimate race in a while. Mccain hasn't run a hard race since early 90s, Rudy hasn't had a hard election in almost a decade, Romney hasn't been in an election since 2002.
Your characterization is wrong.
We need him to run for the Senate seat and to win strongly, especially if he's going to run for the White House.
As for the war of words, read the article and listen to both campaigns, they're on two different playing levels. The Webb campaign is trading middle school insults, the Allen campaign is clarifying Webb's lack of credentials to be a Senator. The difference is subtle, but it's there.
Look around on some of the RAT blogs. All they've got is nastiness.
Jim Webb: Born Angry
I was hoping Allen wouldn't get into a urinating match with this creep Webb. He's my first choice for POTUS, Pence or Tancredo 2nd.
I found the cowboy press release especially childish. I was actually shocked that it came from an actual senate campaign, it sounded like something off of the onion.
Allen is staying above the fray, as is Webb, it seems. Their hired guns are trading the barbs. Probably a distinction without a difference.
