Facing what recent polls show as a near-certain defeat at the hands of an anti-war challenger in his Connecticut's Democratic primary Tuesday, Sen. Joseph Lieberman joined his supporter New York Senator Hillary Clinton in calling on Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign.
A Quinnipiac University poll last Thursday showed Lieberman lagging by a hefty 13 points, and most political analysts blame Lieberman's loss of support on his pro-Iraq war position.
It wasn't the first time Lieberman has called for Rumsfeld's resignation. The New York Post recalled that in a 2003 interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation," the senator called on Bush to dump Rumsfeld - but in view of the assault on his pro-war stand his latest call was seen as an attempt to mollify his party's left wing, which is seeking to punish him for backing the President on Iraq by supporting his opponent Ned Lamont.
Lamont, multimillionaire businessman, has exploited widespread anger among liberal Democrats over the senator's backing of Iraq war as well as his friendly relations with President Bush.
Speaking from his campaign bus Friday, Lieberman told syndicated radio talk show host Ed Schultz "A new face at the head of the Pentagon might help to open minds and rebuild some public support here in America," adding that he was "surprised" to see the defense secretary still at the helm in President Bush's second term, the Post reported.
According to the Raw Story Web site, when Schultz pressed him on whether that meant Rumsfeld should step down, Lieberman said, "Yes."
Responding to Schultz's remark that "there's also been seven Generals that [believe] he should leave, too, " Lieberman said, "I understand their calls . . . Two-and-one-half years ago . . . I was asked and I will give you the same answer I gave then.
"Rumsfeld serves at the pleasure of the President. But, I can tell you this, if I were President, I would say "Thank you, but we need some new leadership at the Pentagon."
When Schultz asked, "So you think Rumsfeld should go?" Lieberman replied, "Yeah. Yeah Yeah. - No. No, it is a 'yes."

Lieberman is really screwing himself by saying this, it won't help him win the 'Rat primary and this will alienate when he runs as an independent.

Ahh, and the opportunist shows his true colors. Dangling over the jaws of electoral defeat, he soils himself and promptly wusses out.
To hell with him.

Liberman's voting record is the envy of Barbara Boxer.
The only thing he has gotten right is his support for the Bush militarism.
So, if he goes, Bush loses a 1 vote for the Iraq and Israel but the Senate is not voting on the subjects anymore.

All the guy had left was his honor-- he'd chosen a position on the war for the good of the country and stuck to it without trying to undermine it.
Now... Pathetic. He has nothing at all.

This is a big disappointment.. I kind of liked Joe Lieberman as a voice of reason among the dems. (Sometimes).

ol' Joe reverts to his 2000 Sore Loserman form. A sad footnote to what might have been an important career. He may come to symbolize the fate of the entire Democrat party, sinking into the slime that they created around themselves and replaced by truly demonic forces.

I don't imagine I'd go far in politics. I'd be myself, unwilling to bend with every reed in the wind. Here Lieberman sells out and it will gain him nothing. Very foolish...
At least go out with honor.

Well Joe, is it a flip today and a flop tomorrow, or a flop today with a flip tomorrow?
At least for the sake of Jews, it is a good thing Lieberman is not elected in Israel.
To: mjolnir
Liberman lost his honor and soul when he ran as Gore's V.P.
He stood by and allow the military votes to be thrown out and he will do the same to Israel if it meant retainig his senate seat. Zell Miller was the only Democrat who refused to sell his soul and got out.
