Bush happy with draft U.N. resolution (cease-fire)

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) — President Bush has signed off on a draft U.N. Security Council resolution aimed at ending fighting in the Mideast and is "happy with the progress being made," his spokesman said Saturday.

But the president knows there could be a long road before violence stops, White House press secretary Tony Snow said.

"I don't think he has any delusions about what lies ahead," said Snow, accompanying Bush on his vacation to his private ranch.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley arrived at the ranch Saturday to consult with Bush as the full Security Council began discussions on the agreement reached by France and the United States.

The draft calls for Hezbollah to stop all attacks and for Israel to stop "offensive military operations." But it would allow Israel to defend itself if attacked.

The agreement broke weeks of deadlock at the U.N., where France and other nations called for an immediate stop to all hostilities.

Israel, backed by the U.S., has insisted it must have the right to respond if Hezbollah launches missiles against it.

"The president knew this was going on and he's happy with the progress being made," Snow said. "He's happy with it. He's signed off on it."

Snow said there would be a second resolution offered at the U.N. "There's still more to do," Snow said. "There's going to be more than one resolution."

Bush did not have any plans to speak to other foreign leaders Saturday, Snow said, including Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

"I don't know if he needs to," Snow said. "I haven't heard Olmert complaining"

I presume this is a strategery or ploy because otherwise there is no reason to agree to a cease-fire with an aggressor like the Hezzies.

Bush surely knows Hezbollah must be destroyed or they'll get fresh supplies and soldiers and start it all over again.

I've seen no evidence that Bush knows this or that he has any understanding that the islamics are fighting a war against western civilization.

I wonder if the buffer zone will include all those entrenched positions Hezbollah created over the years? There's no reason Israel should accept this if Hezbollah retains even a fraction of it's infrastructure. Meanwhile, they've got a few more days to kill bad guys. And Iran has a few more days to make good on it's threat to attack Tel Aviv.

"I haven't heard Olmert complaining"

Olmert has to run it by his far Left wife and daughter.

A better test is whether Netanyahu (the Right) and the IDF would complain.

Bush reportedly spent 15 minutes on the phone with Annan last night...

However, any U.N. "resolution" stinks, as it legitimizes a terrorist organization and forces the legitimate leadership and military of a sovereign nation (Israel) to be on an equal plane with Hizb'allah.

Jihad does not want peace until it reaches its goal.

Right...Israel should stop right before victory and in the midst of cleaning out the nest of vipers occupying Lebanon; so the Islamists may rearm and continue the terror campaign.

"The president knew this was going on and he's happy with the progress being made," Snow said. "He's happy with it. He's signed off on it."

Just a heck of a job Shrubbery!

Music to my ears! I pray that Bibi will eventually take the reins. I am sure the all these missiles have given Israel a goodly push to the right.

Sad to say, but I think you may be correct.

Western leaders have become so weak kneed, effete and and out of touch, I'm surprised we haven't setup Islamic Throat Cutting Centers right here in the US, where pacifist infidel sheep can line up and just get it over with.

Are we ever going to have a leader who is a vertebrate?

Bush, on Sept. 11, 2001, (words to the effect) "...we will regard any country harboring Al Qeida terrorists as an enemy

Bush, on Aug. 5, 2006 (Israel following same doctrine for Hezbollah terrorist): "He's happy with it. He's signed off on it." (stopping Israeli campaign)!

I Say Again: JUST A HECK OF A JOB SHRUB! >

I think Bush is just stalling, an easy task when the "goal" is getting the UN to agree to anything and then actually doing something with one of their endless "resolutions".

And note that this is a DRAFT version of the resolution. That means that the U.S. and France agree that it is good enough for starters. After some talk and revisions and more talk and more revisions and more talk and more revisions they vote. By then, hopefully, Israel will have pushed Hezbollah back across the river.

If this is correctly stated, this requires Israel to give up the advantage of offense, ops tempo, and the attrition of the enemy's logistics tail, and requires requires Israel to shift to defense, but only a time and place of their enemy's choosing. This is insane. Why would Israel agree to this?

I agree. If GW Bush had a real clue, he would have already destroyed Damascus and Tehran. The Iranians and Syrians have bested him. He is as weak aas the Democrats. America is going down!!!

Due to demographics, the Islamics will split Europe from the US. Then they will be in a position to win.

The US and rest of the world is asleep.

If you say so, but maybe they are just pretending not to hear moronic comments from self-important ignoramuses.

...requires Israel to shift to defense, but only a time and place of their enemy's choosing.

I couldn't see Israel agreeing to that. On the other hand...

Last year, February 18, at the annual Jerusalem meeting of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Israel's then Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert reportedly pounded the podium and passionately supported Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon.

'Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon is a model which Israel would apply to Gaza and Samaria.' he said. Olmert went on to say Hezbollah 'terrorists' now stationed in former Israeli army positions throughout Southern Lebanon had accumulated 15,000 missiles and mortars in Lebanon.

Continuing to pound on the podium, he said, 'they have never, never, never used missiles against Israel on the northern border since Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon in May, 2000.' (It was later pointed out that 5 Katyusha rockets had been fired into northern Israel in the period to 2004, a declassified Israeli army document showed).
