(AP) SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- Takeru Kobayashi downed 58 bratwursts in ten minutes today to set a new record at the Johnsonville World Brat Eating Championship.

The Japanese man, considered one of the world's greatest eaters, won eight-thousand dollars at the contest in Sheboygan.

Last year's winner, Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, was unable to defend her title, eating only 34 brats. That's half a brat less than last year. At the time, her performance set a new world record.

Joey Chestnut came in second with 45 brats.

Thousands of people attending the annual Brat Days witnessed the contest.

Kobayashi, of Nagano, Japan, won the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York City. The 160-pound man ate nearly 54 frankfurters.

"Mr. Hot Dog Eating Contest Contender"

One hot dog would hit the spot, but 47 more would really be great.

A routine seven hours of angioplasty ("My left arm's feeling numb and tingly").

It requires a total disregard for what a hot dog is actually made of.

Amen especially to that last one.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm bratwurst.

Love em'. I can only eat 3 or 4 though. They make a great base when your downing Jack Daniels at a BBQ.

Actually Japan has lots of eating contests..and its quite common for a chef to challenge a patron to eat as much as his food as possible.(I saw it on the Travel channel I think)

Oh yeah one more thing,

Johnsonville...

What a great name for a sausage making company!

Kind of like, "Margaritaville," except for Johnsons.

Good lord. That's 16,820 calories, and that's only if he ate them without any buns.

Oh, yeah? Come on down here to L'isiana and we'll show you some sausage. Bratwurst? HA! Have some boudin! Here, alligator and rabbit sausage!

Wash it down with some Abita!

Mmmm. Boudin and Abita.

Before I read the article, I figured this guy would be a Sumo lookin' feller... damn!

Remember the 70's when all were afraid that 'Japan was going to take over the US' w/ their real estate deals? This is worse, a small-ish Nipponese winning any (insert 'American' food here)-eating contest!

K, I dunno about rabbit and gator sausage, but if you say it's good I will take your word for it. I used to eat grasshoppers, live shrimp (dancing shrimp) and waterbeetles when I lived in Bangkok - so I am fairly sure I can handle pretty much anything at this point.

Nothing I love better than a big weekend BBQ. I'm up in Virginia (15 miles outside DC) and this has become a ritual for my family and friends. Hell, we've even been known to fire up the BBQ during snowstorms! Good food, good conversation and lots of beer and liquor - does it really get much better?
