Editorial: Murtha's mind / Congress's defense expert tells the truth on Iraq (gag)
Pittsburgh Post Gazette ^ | 8/4/06 | Editorial Board

Posted on 08/04/2006 10:08:20 AM PDT by pissant

Rep. John Murtha is a person who knows Washington, the military and America -- and who, at 74, after 32 years in Congress, is prepared to speak out on these subjects, no matter what the political cost.

He met with the Post-Gazette Editorial Board Tuesday to discuss a range of issues at comfortable length.

The Democrat from Johnstown recently attracted considerable attention, and the wrath of the Bush administration, by expressing the opinion that it is past time to put forward a plan for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. He bases this assessment on his reading not just of the situation there, but also of the state of the U.S. military nearly 31/2 years after the invasion. Mr. Murtha is in an especially good position to make such a judgment based on his distinguished service as a Marine and on his many years with the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

He is so close to members of the military at different levels that he is considered by some to virtually speak for the U.S. military in the Congress. He considers the services now to have been so run down by the exigencies of the Iraq war that their condition represents a danger for the United States. According to him, the U.S. military in effect has no strategic reserve at this point, in personnel or equipment. He cites also the nearly 2,600 dead, the estimated 20,000 seriously wounded and the some 100,000 returnees suffering from post-traumatic stress.

On the question of U.S. leadership, he declines to speak out personally against President Bush, in spite of the slime being loosed on the congressman -- some of it in Johnstown yesterday -- by critics reminiscent of the "Swift boat" attacks against Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry in the 2004 campaign.

Amazing. 32 years in Congress. A BIG part of the problem with this traitor and his ilk. It is too bad our founding fathers did not forsee the evil possibility of the "professional politician" and put TERM LIMITS into our Constitution. This would be an entirely different country today if that had been a reality.

John Murtha is a scumbag. He is also a media whore just like Cindy Sheehan. He really thinks he has a chance of becoming the majority leader of the US House.

Too bad the feds couldn't nab this bum during "Abscam." That would have done the nation a great favor.

I live in the Pittsburgh area, and also read the left-leaning (some would say liberal rag) Post Gazette. It's interesting and informative to see how they present the "facts". Many of their articles are reprints from the NY Slimes, LA papers and others of their ilk.

Murtha is (to his surprise) facing a serious challenge in this next election. The old-school democrats in Johnstown don't just swallow his crap without blinking.

Once again, Jack Murtha's memory has failed him. A spokesman for the Marine Corps yesterday declared that -- contrary to what Jack Murtha has said publicly -- Marine Commandant Michael Hagee did NOT brief Jack Murtha on what happened at Haditha before Mr. Murtha's May 17 press conference. In fact, General Hagee did not brief Jack Murtha until a full week AFTER he made his scurrilous remarks.

In any case, this is a wise man, whose judgments are built on experience and whose opinions are very much to the point and worthy of attention and respect.

I don't know where to start ripping this piece apart so I'll just say one word, OKINAWA!

Nothing about the law suite, no mention of his election challenge,no comment on his questionable Vietnam record, and most importantly, no mention of the disgust this old fool is held by the vast majority of the military, editorials like this are an example of why the MSM is losing all creditability. And, it is laughable at best to think that President Bush should be listening to this ABSCAM veteran.
