Large fences make good neighbors. And an armed society is a polite society.

Here's my headline...
Tens of billions anually for the lack of a friggen fence!
$2.6 billion? $50 billion would be worth it. I'd go as high as $100 billion if they'd deport. We'd make it up in about three years, if that.

This better be a real, Israeli-style fence, and not the fence found in suburban home backyards.I dunno...two billion doesn't sound like much in government contract dollars. I don't think we can even get the fancy white picket fence across the border with 2 billion, let alone an Israeli-style fence.

From http://cornyn.senate.gov/index.asp?f=record&lid=1&oid=17&rid=237227&pg=1:
"Vehicle and Physical Barriers, Infrastructure Support for Border Patrol Agents: $2.155 billion for physical barriers along the Mexico-U.S. border and 461 miles of vehicle barriers and for infrastructure support for new border patrol agents. Current law authorizes the Secretary of Homeland Security to install physical barriers along the border, and the President has supported the language in S. 2611 which calls for the construction of 500 miles of vehicle barriers and 370-miles of physical barriers (Title I, Section 106). With the Senate-passed FY2007 DHS appropriations bill providing enough money for 39 miles of vehicle barriers, the amendment would meet the authorized level.
Are the 370 "physical barrier miles" co-located with the 500 "vehicle barrier" miles? If so, that's 4.3 million per mile. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that there will be a total of 870 miles of protected border purchased with this 2.155 billion then the cost is $2,477,011 per mile. It better be one heck of a barrier for that kind of money. Regardless, I guess it wasn't funded the first go-round because the senators didn't have their kickbacks worked out yet. Oh well, at least we'll have something down there.
Cheers

Govt. has been building miles and miles of "sound abatement walls" along our highways. They look like hell and cost billions. But a real wall on the border? Can't afford that.
To: DoughtyOne
Bingo! You saw the same numbers I did. Given that we're spending $4b a month overseas, a $2b one shot investment in national security, reduction of increased crime, etc., is a pittance in building the wall (fence).

When they start passing or enforcing laws against the illegals currently here I just might start to believe them.....a itty bitty bit. Til then....................... Ditto's!!
Build fence, big Israeli type of fence, to keep new ones from entering, and repeat offenders from re-entering, and start working on enforcment of existing laws against the illegals - AND THE PEOPLE THAT ILLEGALLY EMPLY THEM - and then maybe, just maybe, I will start to believe.
Until then, those of you (in DC) are on notice, and don't think false promises and half measures are going to secure your (re)election with me.

"I think they had to keep putting this kind of thing off until closer to the election."
No, it was either respond to those mountain of letters from conservative constituents or face the loss of their little butt-buddy page boys, padded deluxe retirements, chauffeur driven limos and fact finding trips/vacations on the taxpayer coin.

If you want a good wall. we should hire the Costa Ricans to build it. We vacationed there last year. Beautiful country, friendly people, good food.
And WALLS everywhere. With wrought iron spikes. Wrought iron bars on windows, doors, carports - everything. One guide told me most new housing is built that way. Stores, offices, factories, all encased in wrought iron bars.
If your house catches on fire, & somehow you get outside, you may still die trying to escape the yard.
My point is this. Central America is swarming with thieves. It's a way of life for them. They deal with it by building walls & putting bars on their windows & doors. I'm afraid wrought iron walls will become very popular in the USA, real soon.
So, either we build a wall on the border, or around every home in the USA, just like Costa Rica.

Don't get too excited. None of that money will actually go to build anything.

"With the current National Guard deployment dramatically driving down illegal border crossings by 45 per cent, we need to continue to improve our work to protect the border," the Senate's top Republican said.I think that is a load of bull. Politicians are just like the weatherman, not accountable. The money will be pissed down the drain and the border will still remain unsecured.
