ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orange County deputy who was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Interstate 4 on Tuesday died Wednesday night.
Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary announced that Deputy Michael Callin was removed from life support and died at 7:25 p.m., WESH 2 News reported.
Beary also said that in addition to his severe leg injuries, Callin suffered serious brain damage from the collision.
Police arrested a man on Wednesday who they said ran down Callin on Tuesday. Callin had clocked the driver Allan Barahona, 19, from his parked motorcycle and had stepped into the raod to stop the speeding car, when the car swerved at him.
The suspect left the Orlando Police Department just before 5 a.m. to be transported to the Orange County Jail. He was found just after midnight and officials said he's responsible for running over Callin at I-4 and Kirkman Road near Universal Studios.
Officials said on Wednesday that Callin's leg was amputated below his knee.
Before Callin's death, Barahona was facing charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. He was found at an address in the 5500 block of Cortez Drive in Pine Hills.
"He is from Honduras, but he has been living in the States for quite awhile. His driving record, from what I understand, is pretty bad, and he has multiple suspensions. I don't know how many, but from what I understand, quite a few," Orlando Police Department Lt. Brian Gilliam said.
Callin was a four-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff's Office, and he came from a law enforcement family. His father is a 27-year veteran of the department and his sister is a student at the police academy
There were three other illegals in car. All have said perp purposely ran over Deputy Callin. Perp will now face murder charges.
He had overstayed his visa. He had about 14 unanswered/unpaid traffic tickets.
Secure our borders, deport all illegals NOW!
Just killing the troopers Americans themselves aren't willing...
Thank You Washington, DC, for the gift that just keeps on giving ... and TAKING.
It's so sad this happen. Prayers to the deputy's family.
I was on I4 yesterday when they had everything closed off. The had like 2 exits closed down in the area and the other exits were really backed up. They had a huge area roped off and plenty of cop cars out there searching.
We really need to get border security and all these illegals sent home.
I hope the suspect experienced some "assertive interrogative techniques" after his apprehension.
Time to bring back Ol' Sparky!
Forget Ole Sparky. Crank up the chain saw.
I left Florida in February. Any idea where on I-4 this took place?
I don't ever recall seeing the cops try to stop speeders that way (flagging them down) except on more local roads.
Too many white knuckle psychos on 4 through Orlando. I don't miss it.
Prayers for his family.
Never mind, I didn't realize it was excerpted until I went to the news site.
It happened at the Universal Exits. The area from Sandlake road exits down to the Kirkman exits were either blocked or extremely backed up.
No, imprison them first, then deport them.
No excuse for what happened to him but it does sound risky. Around here, they will get out and come to the passenger side. And yes, yall. I speak from experience.</p>
We had this discussion at work: what the best way to exacute Murderers.
I went with hanging. It is a dishonorable way to go. It has a stigma to it.
Imagine smelling the hood as they put it on, then as they move you to the trap door. The courseness of the hemp rope as it is secured around your bare neck. Then BANG you feel your body drop thru the air, then SNAP as your neck breaks.Of course maybe you dont die right away, you swing there as your worthless life slips away.
Wow.....I have too much time at work....
May he rest in peace. Prayers for the family.
Oh, yes. That will stop hit and run drivers.
Making hit and run an immigration issue is anything but rational.
I'll wager there are more hit and runs by drunken florida crackers than by all immigrant classes put together.
I shouldn't have posted that. I was just thinking about the guy losing his leg before he died. I agree though, we have become compassionate silly, regarding this.
Prayers for the family.
And for the perpetrator. He will need them before he is judged in front of the Final Judge.
I feel for the family for the tragic loss and prayers to them. I have to say, I have seen police officers JUMP out into the road to stop speeding cars. It's like jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.
