Many are, but I'm one of those strange people who try and prepare for all possibilities. I usually go overboard.
My neighbor doesn't do anything except close the front door. Most of the time he is OK, last year he regretted it.
Only about 10% of my neighbors have generators, but most do prepare to be with out power for a week or so. We are just a bit more comfortable if it happens.
My wife and I have it down now. We can stay home for a month and never have to get out if needed.
