Chirac returns to the world stage and makes the fur fly

THREE years after failing to block the US invasion of Iraq, France has returned to the diplomatic world stage to calm the Lebanon conflict.

President Chirac, returning to his favourite role of world statesman, has taken a bold line at the United Nations that conflicts with Washington and London. He is capitalising on the discredit that Iraq caused les Anglo-Saxons and drawing on France’s past as the governing power of Lebanon.

The strategy is risky because France was targeted by Hezbollah and its Iranian sponsors over its intervention in Beirut in the 1980s. One bomb attack in 1983 killed 41 French paratroops in the city.

M Chirac is worried that a false step could feed unrest in France’s Muslim-dominated housing estates.

But aides to M Chirac are confident that the US will accept the resolution tabled by France at the UN Security Council. It seeks a ceasefire, a political agreement involving Israel, Lebanon and Hezbollah and the deployment of a peacekeeping force.

Washington and London have resisted the demand for an immediate ceasefire and want a military force to compel the disarmament of the Shia Muslim militia.

France refused yesterday to take part in a US-inspired meeting to prepare a UN force, saying that it was premature. But Paris expects to contribute thousands of troops and possibly lead the contingent.

If a UN force is agreed, the first French forces would be dispatched from marines aboard a naval flotilla of four ships off Lebanon and Cyprus.

French officials say that the dispatch of any French forces must follow a phased timetable. “It has to be a real ceasefire, not just a halt in shelling,” the Defence Ministry said.

France is also insisting that Iran and Syria be involved in the diplomacy.

Oh, and Hezbollah. So, let's see if I get the sub-context here correctly. France would rather divide up Lebanon into the playground of Hezbollah, Iran and Syria rather than let Israel go after the very terrorist element that has made Lebanon the minefield it is today.

So, really, it expands the number of parties that can trigger a war rather than reducing them.

Lebanon, I have a grand solution for you - stick the finger up to France, get your guns, go out and disarm Hezbollah, and take responsibility for your borders. Anything else, you're the puppet that will get beaten between all the other players.

I've heard some of them can cook pretty well.

Will the UN force disarm Hezbollah or just be court-side spectators/fans of Hezbollah's attacks?

Easy solution here. Israel wipes out Hezbollah, moves its forces to the Syrian border, leaves a sub off of the Iranian shoreline and tells the world that it will no longer accept terrorist states and that any country that supports terrorism will receive the same treatment Iran is about to receive.

Then turn Iran into a non-oil producing country. Think the Syrians will reevaluate their strategy for supporting terrorism.

Why is this so hard?

1. Hezbollah disarms
2. Hezbollah returns the Israeli soldiers they kidnapped
3. The Israelis have the right to level Iran and Syria should another missile or suicide bomb go off in Israel.
4. There is a NATO force on the Syrian/lebanon border to ensure there is no foul play.

If the Hezzies, Lebanon, Syria or Iran say no, then no deal and Israel continues killing Hezzies.

OK Froggy send your troop. The Israelis will show you where to position them.

France need to lose its permanent seat on the SC. They are not a world power any longer. All they do is finance terrorists states.

""M Chirac is worried that a false step could feed unrest in France’s Muslim-dominated housing estates.""

Is that why he was waving a white flag while making the statement of surrender. What a coward. Amen.

Loony Mahmoud in Iran suggests that Israel relocate to europe. Instead, we can relocate the palis and Hezzies to France.

Don't worry - the French will surrender at first opportunity. I don't expect much from Chirac and the generally incompetent people who surround him.

If they can't handle the Ivory coasters, they'll fair less well against the jihadis.

Hell, I've already committed to seek an ultra conservative Rabbi here in Kalifornicate - and become a Jew - if the REAL Jews of Israel kill enough of the Shiite Head Hizbollah assholes -- and suck Syria into the fray, triggering our entry to conduct a MAJOR fumigation of the area to kill enough cockroaches to put the virulent cancer of militant Islam into remission for another century..

After the smoke clears -- Israel should occupy the oil fields and Gulf Ports of their choice ---- just to piss off the surviving Islamists.

After all -- bad actions should have bad consequences.
