EU rejects Poland's death penalty call

The European Union has dismissed a plan by Poland’s president for the return of the death penalty across Europe.

"The death penalty is not compatible with European values," Steffan de Rynck, the European Commission spokesman, said.

Lech Kaczynski - whose identical twin brother is Poland’s prime minister - said last week that the EU would come to see that the death penalty is justified for murder.

"Countries who give up this penalty award an unimaginable advantage to the criminal over his victim, the advantage of life over death," he told a radio station on Friday.

Poland officially abolished capital punishment in 1997 but the practice had been halted soon after the fall of communism in 1988.

Abolishing the death penalty is a pre-condition for starting membership negotiations with the 25-nation bloc.

Kaczynski's conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party won power last year promising a tough stance against corruption and crime.

The League of Polish Families (LPR), a minority party in Poland's governing coalition, has announced a Europe-wide campaign to restore the death penalty.

"We want to collect half-a-million signatures of European Union citizens on a petition demanding the death penalty for paedophile murderers," LPR vice-president Wojciech Wierzejski said.

Obviously those in the EU love evil more than good. In their mind butchering babies in abortion is okay, but killing hardened criminals is not. Poles need to stand up to these people.

...the value at issue being that of firmly, brutally, unflinchingly doing absolutely nothing to hold an individual accountable for his own actions.

EU 2 Poland:

"Death penalty is NOT European, but French chicks covering up their boobs, that IS European, as is hoardes of women walking around dressed up in Army suplus tents.

"And going to church? That's no longer European, either. But going to a MOSQUE? That IS European.

We'll tell you next week some MORE European stuff, OK, Poland?"

Europe has values? When did this happen? I must have been looking the other way.

Statehood for Poland!

Why would you wish the destruction of historic heritage and ethnic identity on Poland?

I get your point, but many EU countries have abortion policies much stricter than ours. I know Germany does.

The Greens, who were recently in power, used to have as a major part of their platform the abolition of the age of consent.

After seeing what happened with the current member countries and their ceding of sovereignty, I'm surprised Poland actually wants this. It's probably just about money, since they can trade a lot easier with other EU countries, and their workers can work in any EU country without all the paperwork they need now (Poles make up a large number of plumbers, etc., in Germany).

European values aren't compatible with Islam. I bet when Sharia law is instituted in Europe, the death penalty will return.

Not really. Germany has abortion laws, which in reality are a sham. See: Summary of European Abortion Laws
