Heavy Equipment Used to Bury the Dead

BAALBEK, Lebanon -- People in a village outside this Hezbollah stronghold used a front-end loader's scoop to carry away some of the dead Wednesday after a night of Israeli airstrikes and a commando raid inside Baalbek that residents said killed at least 15 civilians.

It was the deepest thrust into Lebanon by Israeli troops since fighting broke out between Israel and Hezbollah on July 12. Israel said its soldiers killed at least 10 Hezbollah guerrillas and captured five.

A crowd of about 50 people from the village of Al Jamaliyeh carried pictures of Hezbollah's leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, during a funeral procession through the hamlet, which was hit by bombs overnight as Israeli commandos stormed a Hezbollah hospital in Baalbek a half-mile away.

The village's dead were shrouded in white cloth and carried to the cemetery in the bucket of a yellow front-end loader. The mayor, Hussein Jamaleddin, lost his son, brother and five other relatives. He broke down crying and pulled at the limbs of the dead hanging out of the scoop.

"This is the leg of my son. He was a sportsman, he did tae kwan do," Jamaleddin wailed.

People around Baalbek said the Dar Al-Hikma hospital was partially destroyed in overnight fighting, but an Associated Press photographer said the building appeared intact. Guards prevented journalists from entering.

The building's entrance was riddled with bullet holes and the door appeared to have been broken down. Two burned cars sat outside the three-story building and a minivan with shattered windows stood nearby, riddled with shrapnel and bullet holes.

I hope the heavy equipment helps them pack the bodies down tight.

Otherwise, these "victims" might be appearing at another "atrocity" in the future.

Are these dead people the ones who were victims of Hezbollah rocket launcher placement?

limbs of the dead hanging out of the scoop.

..and, what the hell are they doing using a front end loader with limbs hanging out like a softshell crab sandwich? There were only 15 dead, it's not like half the city. This also smacks of playing it up to the press - the aggressor playing the victim again. The folks that matter aren't having any of that.

Remember all of the objections that were raised against performing autopsies on the bodies of Iraqi women and children allegedly murdered by US servicemen in Haditha? Supposedly it was not permitted because of the special care given to the dead under Islamic law and tradition. I guess that front-end payloaders must qualify under the traditional Islamic customs for treating the dead with respect, huh...

I don't know whom the Israelis are fighting in Lebanon: seems to be no one there but civilians, women, and children!

Nailed it! I don't know how a Leftist could even write this with a straight face. A frontloader??? For 15 people, with a crowd of 50?? They could bury people with more dignity than that and they know it! This is propaganda for the Western Idiots!

I am concerned about to the loss of innocent life, and I know who bears the responsibility. Hizbollah brought this war on; it attacked Israel. It failed to disarm under the UN Resolution 1559. The IDF does its best, like our own forces, to prevent unnecessary deaths and injuries. When an enemy uses civilians for tactical advantage, it gives up the moral high ground and is the cause of the deaths of the civilians they hide behind. This is yet another shame they bring on themselves with their barbaric ways of war, like the invention of suicide bombing and all its horrors, these terrorists are reaping what they've sown.

And yet, the journalists are more than happy to just take their word for it. Scumbags!
