Compare Gibson's crucifixion to the way a drunken Ted Kennedy was treated after he killed his secretary and was assisted in the cover up but did not ask any cops if they were Jewish.
if his apology is sincere, and if he tries to remove what antisemitism he could have, then kudos to him for eradicating his racism--or at least some of it (every human creature is racist in some way). Some of the commenters on this thread seem to have branded him, though.
I actually have done a fair amount of reading on the subject and am aware of the phenomena you speak of. But as you mention, none of that excuses Gibson in the slightest.
Yeah Mel was drunk....so what, that's his problem. Mel is kind of a wise acre from what I hear and made a few wise acre statements drunk. So what. As If I havn't heard wise acre comments about Jews, Irish, Italians, Mexicans, Polacks, Japanese, Chinese, etc. etc. The press needs to give the guy a break. Mel is a good man.
What I meant was that there could be racism at the heart of that hatred. I'm not saying it's accurate - just that I believe anyone ignorant enough to be racist won't bother to take the time to actually learn about the actual population makeup of Mexico. They are trading in the dark-skinned sombrero-wearing stereotype. And yes, I'm aware of the diversity of the Mexican people.
if he had stated that people of African descent were the cause for all wars in the world, most people of African descent would simply consider him a nut, not an extreme racist (there are a sizeable amount of freepers who figure people of African descent will declare almost anything racist, and thus they become resentful and racist themselves toward people of African descent because of their own faulty construct) even if he was free of alcoholic influence. Why can't some of the Jewish freepers? if he had stated that Asians or Latinos or Europeans (and Asian/Latino/European descended people) were the cause of all wars in the world, those groups would largely consider him a nut. it is absurd at how many freepers are overreacting.

What I want the American people to know, what I want the Congress to know is that I am profoundly sorry for all I have done wrong in words and deeds. I never should have misled the country, the Congress, my friends or my family. Quite simply, I gave into my shame.[...]Meanwhile, I will continue to do all I can to reclaim the trust of the American people and to serve them well.
Mel Gibson is an obviously good man who battles demons. He shouldn't drink, At all. Ever. Sanity is a very wonderful state of mind.
Whats more unbelievable is you thinking that driving over the legal limit is not the very definition of driving drunk.
Whats more unbelievable is you thinking that driving over the legal limit is not the very definition of driving drunk.
Uhh.. that is the defintion isn't it? It certainly is the legal definition. What do you consider the definition of driving drunk to be? I can't believe I'm even having this conversation.
You said 'Yes I have. But I have never driven drunk. I hope you can realize the severity of the difference.'
Perhaps I misunderstood, but it sounds like you were making a distinction between the two.
Last night I caught the tail end of an interview with I believe, Keith Olberman and another gentlemen whose name was not posted while I watched. I believe he was jewish and spoke very eloquently about people going after Gibson because they are jealous etc.
I applauded this interview when it ended; I just wish I could have seen it from the beginning.
Does anyone know who this person was? It was aired last night (Tuesday evening).
Aha - I bet you're referring to Lenin, right?
Jackie Mason.
