Actually I think the "flip" is believed to be relatively short in duration. Of course geologicaly 1000 years is short - but i'm thinking its more on the matter of months to years? (Just guessing).
And there is concern as to what will actually happen (other than looking at my compass upside down). When it 'flips" it may weaken - and the protection it provides from the Sun's electromagnetic field would be reduced (lost?). So - it could be a catastrophe. But I suppose the quicker the "flip' the less harm.
Oh well - I've got other things to worry about!! (And Global warming ain't one of them either!)

Well I'm no expert but I did listen to a radio programme on this recently. All I really know is that the experts were interested but not alarmed in any way. Most times the 'Flip' goes back to where it started apparently. Maybe another FReeper will know better.
I certainly fell for the story! Al Gore is a twit isn't he?
