Group in Gaza kidnapping journalists demands release of Muslim prisoners in US jails
Publish Date : 8/23/2006 2:38:00 PM // Source : R.N.A. // News Type : 2

Gaza, August 23, 2006 (RNA) - A previously unknown group calling itself the Holy Jihad Brigades claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of two foreign journalists working in FOX News Channel nine days ago in Gaza City.

The group said, in a press statement received by RNA, that it kidnapped both journalists in order to swap them for "female and male Muslim prisoners in US-run jails."

Armed gunmen kidnapped FOX News reporter Steve Centanni and his New Zealand cameraman Olaf Wiig, from Gaza City nine days ago. No group or demands were made since their kidnapping until today.

The kidnappers gave a deadline of 72 hours to what they described as "infidel nation", starting on Wednesday afternoon, in order to release Muslim prisoners from US jails in exchange for the kidnapped journalists.

"We will graciously give you 72 hours starting from the middle of this day to agree on your matters, and deliberate. If you fulfilled our condition, we fulfill ours, or await with us as we await," the statement read.

Despite that the form of the statement was not written in the style normally made by known Palestinian groups, what is worth noting is that this statement did not have any logo, stamp or signature of this anonymous group, who commentators believe it is an Islamist one.

As much as this statement carried to those it called "infidels" a call to convert to Islam, it also promised them with slaughtering if they did not, and held the United States and its President George W. Bush responsible for their policies in Iraq and Afghanistan, considering that "the shoes of one Muslim is dearer and more dignified than a thousand [George] Bush."

A video-taped message had been delivered to RNA main headquarters in Gaza, showing both Centanni and Wiig dressed in training suits and seated on the ground, looking healthy. They seemed to have not suffered torture or beating, and said on the tape that they were being treated well.
