Israel Says It Has Captured Guerrillas

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) - Israel poured up to 10,000 armored troops into south Lebanon Tuesday, and separately dropped helicopter-borne commandos deep into the eastern Bekaa Valley where they raided a Hezbollah-run hospital and fought pitched battles with guerrillas, in a major escalation of the three-week-old war.

After the raid on the ancient city of Baalbek ended, the Israeli military said it had captured some guerrillas and hit others. The military statement said all its soldiers returned unharmed to their base, but gave no further details.

The raid on Baalbek, once a Syrian army headquarters 80 miles north of Israel, was the deepest ground attack on Lebanon since fighting began 21 days ago.

The ferocity of the battles in the Bekaa Valley and across southern Lebanon on Tuesday and the determination of the Israelis to keep fighting quelled expectations for an early cease-fire, although U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said an agreement on how to end the conflict was possible within days, not weeks.

Hezbollah's rocket attacks into Israel, meanwhile, diminished. Hezbollah fired just 10 rockets across the border Tuesday, well below an average of about 100 a day since fighting began.

Early Wednesday, Hezbollah's chief spokesman Hussein Rahal told The Associated Press Israeli troops landed near the Hezbollah-run Dar al-Hikma Hospital in Baalbek, about 10 miles from Lebanon's border with Syria.

``A group of Israeli commandos was brought to the hospital by a helicopter. They entered the hospital and are trapped inside as our fighters opened fire on them, and fierce fighting is still raging,'' Rahal said early in the operation.

Rahal dismissed as ``untrue'' reports that the Israeli commandos managed to snatch some patients from the...

Most of academia learned nothing from 9/11. They are caught up in the anti-colonialism is was so importasnt a part of their Marxist education that they can't see the situation on the ground. Marx defined relgion as a delusion, Since all religion is false, there can be no such thing as a false religion. It cannot occur to a Marxist who thinks entirely in socio-economic terms that a religion can be as worldy as dialectial materialism. Conservative jibes about '72 virgins' don't help either. Islam has a very earthly goal, as earthly as Marx's or Hitler's. That is the subjugation of all mankind, who are then to pay homage to Muslim chieftains. It has been their history since Mohammed himself. When we consier what they means when they say that Mohammed was a prophet, we need to think Joshua, not Isaiah.

If you wanted to know how many Missiles Hezbollah had left and some information on resupply from Syria, the easyest way to get it would be to go to a hospital where there are injured Hezbollah from nearly every location Israel has attacked.

That would require picking up perhaps as many as a dozen members and interorgating them. It is a lot easier to break 10 terrorists than it is one. And stories can be compared to determine the truth. The lower level people offert two advantages for Isreal they are not likely trained to resist interrogation and they have seen the situation first hand.

They might also get some resupply infomation.

Reports said they went through the IDs of every patient. They had to be looking for people who had recently been on line and knew what the situation might be.

I think Israel got exactly what they wanted. That is why they took so many prisoners. They also want Hezbollah to think they might be back and that information was not the prime objective.

It seems clear to me now that reporters in Lebanon are reporting what Hezbollah wants them to say. And reporters on the Israeli side are saying what the Israelis tell them.

I think the Israeli report that they didn't get what they were looking for is just disinformation. I find is suspicious that the Isreali army would admit failure in the middle of a war if indeed it was a failure. A combatant almost always only admits failure in order to cover success.

Personally, I was hoping the Israelis had dropped a blocking force in and were going to drive the Hezbollah scum up the valley and trap them. Oh, well.

Disinformation is part of any war. All I know is I hope Israel not only prevails, but at least deals a mortal blow to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. No one can realistically expect Israel to wipe them out altogether. They'll just reform in Syria and elsewhere. But Israel must prevail in cleaning out southern Lebanon to the fullest extent possible, or this will be seen as a victory for the Islamofacist thugs. That MUST not happen. So I hope you're right about this: "I find is suspicious that the Isreali army would admit failure in the middle of a war if indeed it was a failure. A combatant almost always only admits failure in order to cover success."
