Major IDF op underway in Bekaa Valley (Northern Lebanon)
Jerusalem Post ^ | 08/01/06 | JPost staff

Posted on 08/01/2006 2:48:27 PM PDT by mojito

Lebanese army and security officials said Tuesday night that a major IDF operation was underway against suspected Hizbullah positions near Baalbeek in eastern Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, with one officer saying the IAF presence in the air above the ancient city was "unprecedented."

The operation began with at least five rapid air strikes.

"The extreme, unprecedented number of aircraft indicates the possibility that the Israelis are planning to land troops, but we cannot yet confirm that," said one security official.

Flares held aloft by parachutes lighted the night sky to a daytime brilliance, the official said.

Hizbullah's al-Manar television said IAF helicopters were taking heavy guerrilla fire but had not landed any commandos.

Israeli helicopters also attacked a target 15 kilometers west of Baalbek, starting a huge fire, witnesses said.

Earlier Tuesday, the IAF struck three Hizbullah bunkers in the western zone of southern Lebanon.

Warplanes also hit Hizbullah fighters battling with soldiers near the border as the guerrillas fired mortars into Israel.

But remember, numbers mean nothing. It’s quality vs. quantity & the IDF wins easily.

fog of war. "dozens of helicopters" implies a sizeable contingent - this isn't Mogadishu redux folks, and bill clinton isn't the president of israel. there is something *really* interesting in that hospital.

Hmmmmm..

Hizb'Allah

IIRC. (Not that it matters. Hez,Hiz. Vowels are used in ME languages to reflect the status of a person or your opinion of that person. Regional dialect adds another variable. Correct spelling may depend more on 'when' or 'where' it originated.)

Maybe someone can tell us what the Hizb means in deference to Allah?

IDF is a quarter of the size of the Syrian forces. In other words, the Syrian forces are badly outnumbered.

"Just wanted to note that there is NO way that Syria let Saddam's WMD into the Bekaa valley under the control of crazy Hezbollah people (especially with Israeli nukes pointed Syria's way.)"

They were taken there. Some were. Some were taken to other locations. There were three main storage facilities and these components (why take the missile when all you need to hide is the warhead?) were taken by plane, by truck convoy, and by ambulance to three main sites for repackaging and return at a more convenient time.

That more convenient time came and went, and most are none the wiser.
Putin isn't stupid. That stuff wasn't even paid for yet.

Just Google "media stupidity" and hold on to your pants. Even more eyebrow raising is "media stupidity + low IQ." Get ready to see some obscene and very offensive material. That is why I refuse, reluctantly, to post a direct link. Nada por nada. 'Nuff said.

maybe they should investigate this claim by: yoni

I just found out a fact that I had not known. If we remember back to the start of this war Hizballah came across the border and attacked an Israeli patrol of two Hummers killing 8 soldiers kidnapping two.

The next day Israel put a tank across the border which hit a huge anti tank IED, which killed the four man crew. Israel was not able to rescue all bodies of the crew, due to heavy fighting and the bodies being trapped in the ruble of the tank.

After Israel was forced out of the area, Hizballah surrounded the tank. Hizballah terrorist then cut off parts from the bodies i.e. arms, legs, heads to hold these body parts to exert pressure on Israel in addition to holding the two soldiers.

The west must understand the nature of the enemy in order for a victory to be achieved.

If it is true this would correlate to the remains of our two soldiers found in Iraq. When you fight barbarians you must became barbaric. IMO The British failed to do that in the 1776 war and lost, the romans failed to do it and lost, the US did it in WW2 and won. The Allies did it in WW1 and won. The US failed to do it in the Korea,Vietnam, the first gulf war, and Iraq and all those wars ended without a win on the battlefield and caused more problems down the road. The failure of the US to do it in Vietnam led to the killing fields, the failure in gulf war 1 led to the massacre of the Shiites and the present war in Iraq, in Korea it has led to a nuclear threat the world does not understand. War is not civilized it is not a set of rules, it is a battle for survival. You either kill the enemy or they kill you and yours. Failure to do so because of "morals", rules, conventions etc doesn't matter when your dead

the MSM is a tool. they are more for entertainment then information today. watched the factor today and Bill's out of touch since the Qana staged event, he has become more "balanced" which is bad. How can you be balanced when you are at war with you enemy. You do not want your population to be compassionate towards your enemy you want them to loath the ground they walk on. Hiz chants "death to America" "death to Israel" every day. It's like our "good morning". These islamic Nazis say death to America when they wake up and when they go to bed. They hate us because they have been taught to hate us. if they could they would kill every Jew and every non believer in the world. And yet our government and those of the West speak about the Religion of Peace (Islam) and how we should all get along. During the Innagruation speech I started to think that Bush had Rodney King has his speech writer. "can't we all just get along". We as humans have the emotion of hate for a reason. How we use hate to attack others or to defend ourselves is up to the individual. It is a powerful self defense mechanism which the West used to great effect during WW2 but it can also be a powerful destructive mechanism which the Germans used during the holocaust and which the Islam fascists are using now.

I agree 100%. War is fought to the death. Hezbollah are terrorist scum and should be wiped out to the last man. I saw Shimon Peres interviewed by that female air head reporter on PBS tonight. She asked the most vacuous questions. She blinked her eyes for the cameras diligently. The mark of a good reporter today is to blink and nod diligently. Thank G-d Israel has great spokesmen like Peres. But I believe that Israel will have to consider giving Bibi Netanyahu a greater role. Bibi knows how to get the job done, for the 'greater good of all.' ..IMHO. That's "all," and i meant "all," not "Allah." 'Nuff said.

is the IDF going after Saddam's WMD?

It is fairly certain that the WMD that Syria stored in the Bekaa Valley after having received them from Saddam Hussein are no longer there. They would have been removed back when Syria removed their troops and secret police.

Contrary to what some FReepers might believe, Syria had no intention whatever of allowing Hezbollah to get their hands on any of those "toys". I only hope that Bashar Assad made d-d sure his people removed all of them. For if he did not, and the Hezbullies know where they are, then things could take a very serious twist, and a long-uttered Biblical prophecy fulfilled on word-wide cable TV...

The only time we have had peace in the History of the human race was when one side was 1) beaten into a bloody pulp and said enough. 2) when both sides KNEW they would be destroyed by the other. There is no other way to achieve peace. You can not get to peace by talking tried that in 1933, 1991-2003 in Iraq, the killing fields, the Korean war, WW1, revolutionary war, etc Talk does not stop wars.
