Once you got away from the big cities, the German people that I came into contact with were genuinely friendly and accomodating. There were always a couple of anti-American types, but they were few and far between. I dealt with them in as friendly a way as possible. I kind of disarmed them when I spoke to them in pretty decent German.
The looks on their faces were classic, as they discovered I understood everything they were saying!
Great area. Abends Bit, morgans fit.
Fond memories, translated: Evenings Bitburger Pils, Mornings Fit! Bitburger was my second favorite beer. My all-time favorite was Konigsbacher. At least once a month, I'd drive up to the brewery in Koblenz. Their restaurant served Konigsbacher bock year round, and their food was outstanding.
I can second that. I married one 37 years ago.

I lived in Berlin for four years (1983-87) and have visited Germany almost annually for 40 years, but I never had a Konigsbacher. I will have to try one. My favorite is Kolsch. My wife is from Koln.
We are looking at living in Berlin parttime.
