Text of unattributed article headlined "Benhadj at the US embassy - He wanted to demonstrate solidarity with Hezbollah", published by Algerian newspaper Liberte website on 1 August
Ali Benhadj is making headlines again. Yesterday afternoon, the former imam [and second-in-command] of the banned FIS [Islamic Salvation Front] tried to break through a police cordon thrown around the US embassy in Algiers, in order to demonstrate his solidarity with Lebanon. He was arrested later.
Benhadj, who is doing everything and anything to draw attention to himself, is certainly nostalgic about the huge Islamist demonstrations, such as the one held in 1991 for Iraq. He then managed to hold a rally at the Martyrs' Square [in Algiers] in favour of the Kuwaiti princes, and organize a march, with him dressed in military uniform, in favour of Saddam Husayn, a week later.
Benhadj is so incorrigible. He forgot that he once described the Shi'i in his past sermons as "the wound of Islam". Hezbollah will surely appreciate his support.
