"If the US would engage in a crash program of Apollog Moon landing proporations to make itself energy independent by using the whole basket (including more efficiency) at its disposal, the terrorism problem would be over in 10 to 15 years as the money dried up and the Middle East became as irrelevant as Africa."
Wishful thinking. Look how much oil (Energy) companies contribute to the elections of politicians. What politician will stand up to these lobbyists? We will not have an oil substitute until the last drop of oil is pumped from the ground. By that time the (Energy) oil companies will unveil the next oil "substitute". Think about it, what incentive would they have to replace oil with something less expensive and risk making LESS money. NONE. That is actually against corporate law.

I certainly don't expect the oil companies to go along, but poltically considering the benefit to farmers, in terms of increased prices for a huge range of products as well as land use rights for wind mills, it has the potential to happen.
If a crash program were sold to Americans as their patriotic duty and it included conserving, Americans would rise to the challenge. Bush squandered the opportunity. It is the only thing Al Gore probably would have done right and certainly wouldn't have been enough. On this one though W. and Cheney missed a chance to make America stronger and safer. We will have to wait until 2008 to see if we get a President with the foresight to at least try.
