It is a national security issue and should be discussed as such. It goes beyond economics and should be discussed as such.
I certainly don't expect the oil companies to go along, but poltically considering the benefit to farmers, in terms of increased prices for a huge range of products as well as land use rights for wind mills, it has the potential to happen.
If a crash program were sold to Americans as their patriotic duty and it included conserving, Americans would rise to the challenge. Bush squandered the opportunity. It is the only thing Al Gore probably would have done right and certainly wouldn't have been enough. On this one though W. and Cheney missed a chance to make America stronger and safer. We will have to wait until 2008 to see if we get a President with the foresight to at least try.
Americans were into recycling during WWII (scrap metal, paper drives, rubber, etc...).
Then again there was government rationing of food and gas.
National Security means nothing to pointy headed liberals who consider America to be the cause of the problems. Their ultimate goal is the collapse and overthrow of our constitutional system of government.
Now more than ever we need to remind people they don't have to stay here if they don't like it. They need to stop trying to change hundreds of years of social thought and impose their global will. They can move to whichever country they think is doing it better. Love it or leave it. The public has rejected socialism over here again and again.
