Microsoft Friday said that this week it will begin charging US$1.50 for users to download a copy of the Office 2007 beta 2.

"In just the past two months since its launch, more than 3 million people have downloaded the 2007 Microsoft Office system beta 2," the company said in a statement sent via e-mail. "Given how dramatically the beta 2 downloads have exceeded our goals, we have made the business decision to implement a cost-recovery measure for downloading the beta."

I am still using Office 97 on the corporate laptop at the office, it works great, I still haven't used 95% of its features, and never once I said to myself "damn, I need that new feature in Office 200x"

No kidding. Are there really that many power users who use any of these new features? I can't imagine 99% of the people use any feature beyond what was in Word 6.0.

Ah, web based, and aimed towards firefox users; I am inclined to like this a lot!

Making the reasons I don't switch to Mandriva and/or Knoppix fewer and fewer...

I am a consultant to one of the Fortune 500 companies - about 150,000 PCs to manage - and they are seriously considering categorizing users into "normal doofus", "Power User", etc. (the categories are mine), and giving the "normal doofus' OpenOffice, which is free, and still gives the user with 10 times the features that they would need. And at around $80 U.S. a pop for a heavily discounted Office license for, say, 3/4 of the users, then one can see the savings.

I'm running MEPIS and Xandros on two pooters at home...

MEPIS is easiest to install...about as easy as Knoppix...but easier on the eyes...
Xandros is slick lookin too..I wish they would come out with their new version soon...

Well, I also may try Ubuntu as well (as I am new to Linux), as that seems very friendly and a good distro to 'cut my teeth' as it were.
