Geeze, we need to get the global warming nuts on this as China's 'artificial sun' sounds as though it will contribute to more global warming. /sarc

They could power a lot of air conditioners and cool the earth with them. /sarc (yes, i know thermodynamics)

Mike, what happens if the magnetic bottle fails and plasma gets loose? Is this dangerous?

It always fails, but the amount of plasma is minute and does no damage, up till now.

But how much energy does it take to produce incredibly massive magnetic fields? These fields would have to be sustained to keep the fusion from becoming a "fizzle" right?

Is it all just more expensive scientific "God role-playing" and will anything really productive come of it? Will we really have a "Mr. Fusion" powered car someday?

Shades of the "Hellbore" weapon found in the Bolo series of sci-fi stories.

I read one sci-fi story where they needed a quick-and-dirty weapon for one orbital vehicle to combat another. They came up with the "HellWinder", a Hellfire with a Sidewinder guidance/maneuvering system. It just sounded mean.

Not to worry - they have their top scientists on it...

It's extraordinarily hard

Oh, come now... I've been doing it on my desktop for years.

communist governments don't teach people how to think for themselves. I've met plenty of chinese PhDs that are nothing but glorified lab techs because all they do is find ways to seem to produce the results the professor wants to hear. Independent thinking gets you sent to a labor camp.

Every day there's an article about a factory or mine or chemical plant that blows up in China. One disaster after another. Do they really want to try this?

Is this to light and heat their new undergroud shelter?

Just so long as they don't insert the Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator into the thing...

The experiment will take place in a structure made of reinforced concrete, with five-foot-thick walls and a three-foot-thick roof.

Wow, that's not even as thick as some reactor containment walls.

What it really means is that there will be extra shrapnel when this thing blows.

Okay, okay, I got all that. But where does the spork-weasel come into play?

Wish them luck. But don't break out the party hats just yet.

Sounds like the old "Zapsat"

A SRAM second stage coupled with a Phoenix seeker head. Fired from a modified F15, all the test shots were successful. Several of the modified F15s are still in the fleet.

Scary pilot track had to be followed for launch. 'Zoomed' to the edge of space.

Cool stuff tho.

If they really want to make that old Russian design pay off in the "long run", they'll concentrate on recapturing the energy that goes into creating the plasma in the first place.

We know that fusion can occur under these conditions, but the trick is to make it pay off. With advanced energy conversion equipment, from light-to-electricity to heat-to-electricity, in addition to MHD, they may be able to "layer-up" into a productive configuration.

Next I want to see them shrink it down so I can put it on a motorcycle.

There will be radiation. You could ride the bike at 60 below zero without a parka.

Haha, a lot of freepers like you claim they hate communists, but I think what they really fear is just Chinese starting to compete with you guys.
whether you like it or not, China is more capitalistic than US now. In fact, I can argue a good case US is more socialistic than China now.Their Phd's qualities are rising in very fast pace. You can use such arrogant attitude to view Chinese people. Not a problem. Just don't complain nobody warn you that you are going to work for a Chinese company.
