I love Mel's movies, but what he said is beyond belief. And I hate to be the one that says it, but being drunk does not CAUSE bigotry, it REVEALS it. Have you heard what he said? Absolutely disgusting. And I am sick of actors, athletes, and other famous people being able to say all sorts of vile things and then, only after being caught, apologizing. I have to agree with the ADL on this one. An apology alone is not enough.

The facade that is Mel Gibson has finally shown its face. I guess if it seems to good to be true, it usually is. Mel proved this right, again. Do I think he's sorry? Yep- sorry he got caught spewing his Jew hatred. Seems the apple didn't fall too far from the tree.

That said, I still PotC is one of the most moving films ever made- and not anti-Jew. Makes me wonder what the unedited version would have been like though.

I think that you be misunderstanding my position. It's not that I don't think that what he said was totally wrong, and I'm not even defending his right to speak such hate and bigotry, especially in times like this. It's that he's an actor, for pity's sake, and I don't give any weight to what actors or other celebrities say on any issue. I don't support him,for sure-I've never even seen any of his movies-I don't watch any movies newer than app 1963,and only a few older than,say,1949. So I don't support him.

I just don't care what silly celebrities in this celebrity-ridden culture think!

After a family member of mine was almost killed by a drunk driver years ago I now think everyone of them should get a mandatory 5 year sentence ... and for someone who has enough money to "own Malibu" not to hire a driver when he decides to be criminally irresponsible - disgusting. Then he goes on to insult women and Jews!

Agreed Also not forgivable are the over 1000 death threats he has recieved after Passion came out.

So he claims. Do we have any independent evidence eg fingerprint checks on the letters, Locations of the phones that made the calls? Until I see cold hard evidence I am assuming he did what any Hollywood type would do and fabricated the threats to invoke pity and make more money ( which in what happened).

Why not harshly punish those who actually cause the accidents. You know being very tired can impair driving far more than alcohol...Should we police that also ? I say let the punishments begin when someone actually gets hurt.

In vino veritas. You are right, what Mel really thinks came to the surface. In any event, he should suffer the appropriate punishment for driving drunk.

Being tired doesn't seem as deliberate as getting behind the wheel drunk and it could be hard to prove in court.

I do know of two different cases where people were killed by drivers that fell to sleep after staying up all night working so you may have a point. Maybe they should be penalized by not not as harsh as a DUI, mostly to deter other's from being irresponsible behind the wheel.

If the Dixie Chicks apologized for what they said, would you forgive them? It doesn't matter that he apologized...YOU GUYS JUST DON'T GET IT.

I live by the maxim, "Never apologize, never explain." It has worked well for me my entire adult life. I am successful in my personal life, as well in business. But by following this code, I have disarmed my detractors on more than one occasion. Yes, I have made mistakes. Some very grave. But why should I grovel? It's between me and me.

I SO AGREE WITH YOU...if this is the way he feels, why apologize...in fact, I'd respect him more if he didn't. I was pilloried here on FR when I said I actually respected the Dixie Chicks for NOT apologizing...why apologize for soemthing you believe?

I just think the whole DUI system is too rigid and doesn't take the drivers particulars into account (Eg tolerance level).I still think DUI should be a crime though...mainly because EVERBODY knows the risks .

"Mel Gibson's Apology Not Enough for ADL"

Why should it be? He apologized specifically to the police twice and not at all to Jewish people. What's so cool about neo-Nazism (which his comments certainly did fit)? Within the context of dishonest religious identity propaganda or not, it's wrong. And if the shoe fits, wear it. How far do obvious antisemites want to go with the lies?

He never admitted to anything.

I can understand him not wanting to repeat what he said, can't you?
