by real conservative do you mean pro-CFR, pro-no-child-left-behind, pro-senior drug plan, pro-amnesty, pro-huge spending deficits, pro-transportation bill, etc?
i think the major things conservatives have gained with a gop presidency are judicial appointments, foreign policy, tax cuts (with qualifier regarding spending increases), and an end to gun control legislation. I believe that this combo, overall, is not what anyone would have expected even at the end of 2001, from a gop government.
