Israeli combat soldiers walk along the Israeli northern border with Lebanon. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is pursuing a new round of Middle East diplomacy as the Lebanon conflict moved into its 19th day, with Israel and Hezbollah exchanging firepower and threats in defiance of international moves toward a ceasefire

Interesting take on the situation from Captainsquarters.

This is a smart move by the Israelis. It gives Hezbollah 24 hours to manuever, of course, but the time won't be long enough to bolster their capabilities in any meaningful manner. The suspension shows that the Israelis will respond to the global community within reason, taking some of the diplomatic heat off of Israel and the US.

A suspension puts more pressure on Hezbollah than it does Israel. The world has screamed for a cease-fire, and Israel has conditionally agreed, at least for a short period. If Hezbollah quits firing over the border, the Israelis may extend it, allowing the conflict to settle. However, no one really believes that Hezbollah will honor this -- after all, they started the war, and they obviously believe this plays to their benefit. Once they launch another rocket, all bets are off, and Israel will get at least another two weeks before the ADD-addled global diplomats again forget that Hezbollah started the war.

The US also benefits with this suspension. Given that our State Department announced it first and that it came at the end of Condoleezza Rice's trip to Jerusalem, it appears rather obvious that the demand came from the White House. That kind of intervention establishes that we have some limits -- even if they are foolish limits -- to our laissez-faire attitude towards Israeli action.

I predict that the suspension will not last; Hezbollah will continue its operations, providing yet another point of clarity in this conflict.

Will Hizbullah stop?
No, I do not think so. If they do, they have a very effective control and command system with a strong line of command. This means that if is decapitated they are toast.

I love John Bolton. He should have been Secretary Of State. And he puts the truth squarely in front of the council... Hezbollah is using civilians as human shields to keep Israel from knocking out their capability to prolong the war since Israel is reluctant to harm the civilians. He made that clear even as all the other speakers where condemning Israel without knowing all the facts. Go figure.

I tend to agree with that, but maybe the forces that went in earlier this morning saw light opposition, and the generals are willing to risk it.

Israel reserved the right to defend against any attacks using air, and I didn't see any qualifiers, such as "inside Israel", so....

I'm betting they'll call it a day on this battle, accept a few billion in "aid" and sit back for a few years again and then re-emerge that much stronger.

UN council agrees on statement deploring Qana raid

UN Security Council members reached agreement on Sunday on a statement expressing the 15-nation body's "extreme shock and distress" at the deadly Israeli shelling of the Lebanese village of Qana.

The statement, to be brought to a vote soon, "strongly deplores this loss of innocent lives" in Qana but does not call for an immediate truce, as requested by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan but opposed by the United States. (Reuters)

Yes, but would you agree that if Nasarallah (Syria/Iran also) wants it to stop and C&C is still effective enough to get the word out, then this war comes to a halt?

I think if they do it at their computers, they fit the definition of multi-taskers, not purists.

And if they announce it, and share recipes, they're friendly human beings. :-)

I even think hezbollahh could fire off more katushkas - and the media and the "world community" won't see that as a resumotion of hostilities.

its al one sided, all against israel. israel blinked here.

More armor massing at the border, they don't seem to think it's over. Back to wait and see...again.

A letter to the editor of a German paper, from Little Green Footballs.

I lived until 2002 in a small southern village near Mardshajund that is inhabited by a majority of Shias like me. After Israel left Lebanon, it did not take long for Hezbollah to have its say in other towns. Received as successful resistance fighters and armed to the teeth, they stored rockets in bunkers in our town as well. The social work of the Party of God consisted in building a school and a residence over these bunkers! A local sheikh explained to me laughing that the Jews would lose in any event because the rockets would either be fired at them or if they attacked the rockets depots, they would be condemned by world opinion on account of the dead civilians. These people do not care about the Lebanese population, they use them as shields, and, once dead, as propaganda. As long as they continue existing there, there will be no tranquility and peace.

Israel's explanation is a reasonable one. The council members saw the IAF footage and ignored it. But hey, why be bothered with the facts when you "know" Israel is already guilty? Its an Alice In Wonderland and the Queen Of Hearts situation over there in Turtle Bay. We came to Israel's defense again.

Iran has no intention to stop this, it will go on until at least August 22, the date when Ahmadinejad has promised something weird.
