PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush are spending a quiet Saturday after two exceptionally busy weeks. Tomorrow they will attend a tee-ball game on the South Lawn before the President travels to Florida later in the day. The First Lady continues her round of campaign events for Republican candidates next week.
Here is a very important item of news that may have escaped notice amid the momentous events taking place in the Middle East last week. (As always, the following are excerpts. Click link embedded in titles to read entire articles.)
Bush Administration to Unveil Detainee Legislation Next Week
Tuesday, July 25, 2006
WASHINGTON The White House is expected to unveil as early as next week a proposal on the legal handling of detainees after weeks of negotiations with Congress and meeting with military lawyers.
The recommendations, likely to be described by senior administration officials during a Senate hearing, would lay out a plan for prosecuting terror suspects detained by the military.
Still under discussion this week is whether the White House will agree with GOP senators to base a new effort on the military's court-martial system, which would afford terror suspects certain rights, or to champion legislation that would authorize the Pentagon's more stringent existing tribunal system.
The administration has been wrangling with the issue of detainees' legal rights since a June 29 ruling by the Supreme Court, which determined the military tribunals established by the Pentagon to prosecute the prisoners requires authorization by Congress.
In the meantime, WWIII or no WWIII, the Left never rests:
Plan B Advocates Want White House Papers
POSTED: 4:03 pm MDT July 28, 2006A group demanding easier access to the emergency contraceptive Plan B said Friday it seeks to subpoena White House e-mails and other documents as part of its lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration.
The Center for Reproductive Rights is seeking permission to request any e-mails, letters and records of conversations exchanged by the White House and the FDA to determine whether the administration weighed in with "instructions or directions" to regulators on how to proceed with a drug maker's request to allow over-the-counter sales of the pills.
The group outlined its request in a July 21 letter to Magistrate Judge Viktor Pohorelsky of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. It released the letter Friday.
Activists Arrested At White HouseFive antiwar activists, four of whom have been on a hunger strike for 25 days, were arrested yesterday for demonstrating without a permit after they blocked an entrance to the White House during British Prime Minister Tony Blair's meeting with President Bush.
Now for the news I'm sure you've all been waiting for: does President Bush watch American Idol? White House aide Emily Lawrimore told the media that the President "hasn't watched" Idol, "but like all Americans, he's very aware of the show."
THE WEEK AHEAD: No announcements were made a this week's WH press briefings, but the following was gleaned from various press reports.
_ Monday, the President travels to Florida Sunday where he will attend a dinner with community leaders in Miami Beach. The next day he will visit the National Hurricane Center, tour the Port of Miami, and attend at a Republican-sponsored luncheon before returning to Washington._ Tuesday, First Lady Laura Bush delivers the keynote address at the second regional conference on "Helping America's Youth" in Denver, CO.
_ Thursday, President Bush will visit Anzalduas Park, Mission, Texas.
_ Friday, First Lady Laura Bush will be the featured guest at a fundraising breakfast for U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH), at the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal.
_ Also next week, the U.S. and UK will be working to obtain an agreement at the United Nations Security Council on creating a multinational force to lead to a cessation of violence in the Middle East.
EXTENDED SCHEDULE:
_ The President and First Lady are expected to take their customary vacation at their Crawford ranch early in August. However, both will be campaigning for Republican candidates throughout the month. Aug. 16, President Bush campaigns for gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann in Lancaster, PA.
Here's a perfect example of why I like to publish the presidential schedule for the Dose community. As you know, the White House releases the presidential weekly schedule, usually on Fridays, for the benefit of the American taxpaying public. The media, however, likes to have the American public believe reporters are privy to exclusive inside information. This short item from KGBT-4 Action News (a TV station in the Rio Grande Valley) reveals how they routinely lie, even at the local level, and even about information released to the entire media by the White House.
Notice they say "Action 4 News has learned," not "the White House has announced." They compound the deception with, "Sources tell Action 4 News..." As for the statement that those "sources" would not disclose the reason for the President's visit or where he would be making special appearances, that's a total fabrication. Other articles state that he is going to highlight his border and immigration proposals. As for EXACTLY where he would appear, those details are never announced in advance for security reasons, but the general location of his visit was announced. It's Anzalduas Park in Mission.
President Bush May Visit Rio Grande ValleyAction 4 News has also learned President George W. Bush will make his first visit the Rio Grande Valley next week as president of the United States.
Sources tell Action 4 News Mr. Bush will visit the Valley at the end of the week but they would not disclose the reason behind the president's visit or where exactly he would be making special appearances.
MR. SNOW: Hello, welcome. Busy day. Helen, I'd like to see you afterward. No, you're not in trouble. I just have a favor I'd like to ask.
Q Why? (Laughter.)
MR. SNOW: You'll find out. A very busy day here at the White House. The President, as you know --
Q What is it?
MR. SNOW: I'm sorry, what?
Q You might as well tell all of us.
MR. SNOW: You'll find out. Life is full of surprises.
No word on what "favor" Tony wanted to ask of Helen, but we probably all can imagine. ;-)
This weekend ohioWfan (and two other female FReepers) are doing the Singles thread (on the subject of marriage). Please consider stopping by and saying, "Hi" to her. Here's the link -- it's a three-day thread that runs Friday evening through Sunday: Singles thread
Pinging you to the Saturday Dose.
1st?
That fool, David Gregory, is seated over there to my left [lower left corner]. I'm not even gonna look his way.
Early for a change!
Even Tony is surprised by your stupidity.
Ouch, Stretch. Sorry a big guy like you has to sit in one of those little chairs next to gaseous Helen.
We're outta here!
You and I, together forever,
You and I.
Through the years
Of dark and fair weather,
You and I.
You and I.(From the musical "Meet Me In St. Louis," song "You and I," words and lyrics written by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown.)
So they have to pay for their own eats for one day. Won't hurt 'em. Save the taxpayers a few hundred. And that's a good thing.
In a week or so, I'm goin' home to Texas...and I know how much the press corps will enjoy sitting in the sun down there. Hehehehehe...
