I feel the same way about wishing I had paid attention the the world around me..but, like a lot of women my age, I was busy being a MOM...and working.

I don't remember watching too much TV during that time. Too tired.

Psy-ops? Make the enemy more confident so they don't take precautions they otherwise would, and encourage them to come out of hiding by thinking they're in a better strategic position than they actually are?

Just an educated guess without any military/security training or background.

I did pay a lot of attention back then...and I still never understood how we could deploy with such stupid rules of engagement...

to add to my post 738, the war in Lebanon in the early 80s was so bad that I remember when you refered to something that was a mess, you would say, it looked like downtown Beirut

See, that's what I need to learn about...the big picture. So much research to do and so little time.

Did you know back then that it was Caspar Weinberger that called off the attack? Did you even know that an attack had been planned...and then called off at the last second?

I was in college then...spent a lot of time researching history, but also a lot of time digging bits and pieces about American foreign policy out of the local government repository library...wasn't as conservative as I am now, but fast getting there from an honest study of history. I did a major project on the Lebanese civil war about that time for a class on political geography. That's when I learned it was a real mess with no simplistic answers period, except the growing pan-Arabist movement was going to be trouble. And there were injustices done by multiple sides, and I had no idea where they were going to get enough consensus to get restabilized.

Well, Syria and the well-fanned flames of hatred of Israel gave them enough consensus to get moving past the violence, but it has resulted in what you see today.

I think Nazareth is 40 miles from the Lebanon border. So, yeah, would imagine a longer range one. Unless they got REALLY lucky with those Katyushas. But since they have to be firing from a ways away from the border....I guess the longer range ones.

I see that statement on many quick stories on the subject.
It depends on who is behind the statement and if and how the entire beckground is given.

Your post 753 is a good in a nut shell statement.
What was going on was so complex, not a simple way to explain.

And a big part of it goes back tothe Ottoman Empire and then to France and how it took over Lebanon at the end of WWI, and how it left its colony. Many things have deep roots...Choices made now may have unforseen consequences for our grandchildren.
