A 21st Century Energy Policy
Monday, July 17, 2006
For too long, our dependence on oil -- particularly foreign oil -- has shaped our foreign and national security policy. For too long, we have allowed ourselves to be dependent on the whims of foreign dictators whose nations control vital supplies of a resource we need, often times in parts of the world where instability leads to the supply disruptions that can wreak havoc on energy costs. For too long, moreover, our dependence on foreign oil has meant that we have, in effect, been funding both sides in the Global War on Terror -- putting vast sums of money in the hands of those who do not share our democratic ideals, and who fund those bent on destroying our American way of life.
The success of the Manhattan Project during World War II and the Kennedy-Johnson era drive to land a man on the moon prove that when America sets its mind to achieving something, there is nothing that can stop our technological know-how. In both cases, we succeeded because our national leaders set and announced a clear national goal, with a clear timetable, and then committed the resources necessary to accomplish the mission.
We need such a determined plan of action now to develop a comprehensive energy policy for the 21st Century, so that we can reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and claim energy independence.
We must make it a national priority to use our technological superiority to develop alternate, renewable forms of energy, while simultaneously creating effective, common-sense incentives for conservation.
Meanwhile, we must take advantage of the rich natural resources America enjoys.
I believe we must increase domestic supplies of energy, including allowing for exploration and drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- a place where, studies show, we could draw as many as 10 billion barrels of oil, the rough equivalent of 20 years' worth of imports from Saudi Arabia.
I believe we should reduce the regulatory red tape that has effectively shut down the growth of one of the cleanest, safest, most affordable sources of energy we have - nuclear power. We now operate 104 nuclear power plants in 31 states, but we haven't built a new nuclear power plant in America in a generation. We need to ease the burden and increase incentives for the construction of new nuclear plants.
Thanks!
Good plan!
Nuclear, and domestic energy is way to go for energy independence and CO2 reduction.

GO DIANA GO!!!
Diana Irey's outlook on an energy plan for the country is well balanced and uses good old common sense, it's not an either-or plan that the Dems and the enviro's keep harping about.
We need her and a lot more like her in Washington DC.

Hello Justa, I'm envious as heck. I saw where you and the rest of the FReepers at Walter Reed had the priviledge of Mrs. Irey joining you this evening.
That is fantastic she was there and hope she enjoyed it.
I can also tell you that the TROOPS enjoyed the time they spent with HER!!!
Will give you the "rest of the story" tomorrow, as I am exhausted. ;*)
So, what's your answer? Little squirrels on treadmills? :-)

First, look at blacklightpower.com and cheniere.org for non-polluting, non-nuclear energy sources; they've been around for YEARS but the guy behind the curtain(big oil/vested interests)has fought their development all the way. Then there's LENR, another possible energy source + clean up nuc-rad-waste quickly and cheaply. Instead the glassification project at hanford has ballooned from $4B(2000)to $11.55B now(2006), call it the good-old-boy Yucca Mountain cabal.....Personal experience : MHD(MagnetoHydroDynamics)has been tried with coal plasma but the coal slag quickly coats the throat walls, gumming it up. Pondering the problem on waikiki beach 5 years ago : possible solution : slide 4 film-belts thru on the throat walls like camera film, as endless loops. Then clean off(sand blast or scrape)the coal slag on the outside and recoat with gel or sprayed on copper metal in a continuous process. The films also remove some heat off the cryogenically cooled, superconducting EM walls......Gave the idea to my Sen Conrad Burns to forward it to the DOE, which he did. The DOE gave me the finger.....So much for "energy independence". Finally you LEARN : VESTED INTERESTS. All this talk about "energy independence" is one big fat LIE, VESTED INTERESTS want to keep those BIG BUCKS rolling in = KILL any new idea to improve the situation asap. My 3000+ collegues in the new energy field have learned this lesson all too well....

I saw her last night at the Walter Reed Free Republic demonstration. She has real potential to win against Murtha. She is impressive and talked with every single person there, a real down to earth type of person, magnetism, poise, obviously intelligent.
And, thanks especially for the printer friendly page. How kind of you!
Please FReepmail me if you'd like on the Irey/Murtha ping list.
