Angelides, Schwarzenegger at odds over abortion measure (CA)

Last November, Proposition 73 - the parental notification initiative - lost by modest margin, 52.6 percent to 47.4 percent. Meanwhile, Schwarzenegger's four reform measures targeting teacher tenure, union dues, legislative district boundaries and state budgeting practices lost by sweeping margins.

Now the parental notification measure - which would require doctors to inform a parent or guardian before performing abortions on girls under 18 - is back on the Nov. 7 ballot, as Proposition 85. And this time, Democrats and legal abortion supporters hope the measure - endorsed by Schwarzenegger in 2005 - will help boost his opponent, state Treasurer Phil Angelides.

"I think it is a real issue and it will be able to help us," said Bill Carrick, a senior strategist for the Angelides campaign. "Pro-choice women will know that they can count on Phil, but they can't count on Arnold."

Unfortunately, unborn babies can count on neither, as Arnold is almost as much a pro-abort as Phil.

Abortion may have passionate support in California, but I think most normal people can distinguish between support for abortion and the idea that parents need to be notified when any kind of medical procedure is performed on their child. I don't think most normal people with even a room temperature IQ would equate the common sense idea that parents need to be involved in their kids' medical care with the notion that somehow that will morph into abortion being banned.

Arnold is NOT pro-life. There's not a dime's worth of difference between him and Angelides in their support for abortion. Given this state's politics, its hard for pro-life candidates to win here. Still, the majority of the American people back parental notification laws. Angelides' view is parents have no right to learn if their child is getting an abortion even though authorities have to notify parents if a child has been given an aspirin tablet. An abortion is an invasive, life-threatening procedure. As a parent I'd want to know so I can decide if its right to have my female child subjected to one.

The last vote on this issue out in California indicates that the majority of voters there are not "normal people with even a room temperature IQ."

The problem was the unions had all their idiots out. A lot of people who voted just didn't. In a normal election this would pass easily. It's just the Dems. worked to get everyone under their thumb out and they got no votes on everything on that ballot.

We'll see how deep this support really goes, but if history is any guide, I don't expect much. Arnold gave Prop 73 only a tepid endorsement, but never included it on his list of "Join Arnold" propositions in any of his literature:

From the Join Arnold website the California Recovery Team was the main campaign committee that raised and spent funds to support Propositions 74, 75, 76, and 77 in last year's special election.

Ironically, even though Prop 73 didn't make it onto Arnold's list, it was the one that came closest to passage. If he gives this measure any more than lukewarm support, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
