House Conservatives Circulate Letter on Minimum Wage
FreedomWorks ^

Posted on 07/28/2006 7:10:44 AM PDT by Solow591

Despite the clear economic case against a higher federal minimum wage, "moderates" in Congress are continuing the push the issue. Fortunately, House conservatives are not going along with this misguided effort, and members of the Republican Study Committee circulated this letter on Capitol Hill yesterday.

"The first Reagan victory was a quarter century ago. The world has changed."

Sound principals and universal truths never change. If you did not learn that from Reagan, then you never understood him. The left are the ones who say there is no right or wrong.

I would like to see the minimum wage indexed to inflation with yearly increases to reflect this.

It's more of a communist thing for the government to be telling an employer what to pay its employees. Personally, I'd rather they did away with the minimum wage altogether and let the market decide.

If you are concerned that wages would drop, then lobby to get rid of the illegals. That would force wages upward.

Here's an idea. If whomever is working for $5.25 an hour today is not happy with that, and they have the skills, they should go apply at Wal-Mart where the average wage is over $10/hr.

The first job I had (age 14) stocking shelves in a hardware store in 1975 paid $6/hr. I would be surprised if you could even find a job that offered a wage as low as $5.25. The free market has created this, not the socialist politicians.

Actually, I apologize for my #79. I had no right to call any conservative an idiot.

Shoulda been...

"social and crunchy cons" have a place here. Idiot conservatives socialists, OTOH...

You justify selling out a conservative principle by quoting Otto von Bismarck?

Good grief.

There's a lot of controversy over exactly who said it. Some say Bismark and others say Twain. A very vocal minority says Mencken. I went with the underdog on principle.

That is what bothers me about Bush. He either does not "get it", or he does not have the means to deliver an argument and thus he just folds.

If you win an election by instituting the opponent's platform, what's the point?

I doubt it was "on principle."

I am all for winning elections too, but we don't have to be democrats to win. We have a winning message. We just have to deliver it.

The Point (such as it is): You've won the election and you don't have to scramble for a job as talking head on cable TV show.

"Quick. Go buy a copy of Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. Read it. You'll be glad you did. Seriously."

LOL! You beat me to it. I always recommend Sowell to the Economically Clueless as well. ;)

The majority of Americans would disagree on that point, and it is an election year.

Okay. What's the message? What are the top three things that people feel everyday that the Republicans have delivered?

This midterm election is going to be bread and butter. It's not going to be an "issues" election or foreign policy election or war election. It's going to be one of those "in the gas tank" or "in the fridge" or "in the bank" elections.

It's going to be that way, because that will be the Dems mode of attack.
