Dump Condi: Bush Allies in revolt over Mideast policy
Insight on the News (via Drudge) ^ | July 25, 2006 | Insight on the News

Conservative national security allies of President Bush are in revolt against Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, saying that she is incompetent and has reversed the administration’s national security and foreign policy agenda.

The conservatives, who include Newt Gingrich, Richard Perle and leading current and former members of the Pentagon and National Security Council, have urged the president to transfer Miss Rice out of the State Department and to an advisory role. They said Miss Rice, stemming from her lack of understanding of the Middle East, has misled the president on Iran and the Arab-Israeli conflict.

there are some here, long time FReepers that thing they own the joint....either that or those that can't have a debate without insulting, name calling, all against the rules also....so I would just let them spew their hate.....don't answer them and they will go back and bother someone else with their sorry situation in life

Then there are the Freepers who talk about other posters behind their back without the courtesy of pinging them, which IS a forum rule.

Richard Perle and Newt Gingrich? Surely you can find better supporters of your position. Seriously, they are citing Baker as a man who dared to confront Saddam...they left him in power FGS and quite a hell ensued for those who counted on US support. As for Rice's knowledge of the region...read Perle prewar comments leading up to Iraq. He belongs to the group that said that Iraqi's would greet us with flowers. I have dismissed most everything he has said about the region since then.

The commentary would have more credibility if there had been specific criticisms of specific actions and if there had been specific examples to back the claim that Dr. Rice lacks knowledge or experience. The commentary claims that she's been pressuring Israel to be less aggressive, but "pressure" can be a nebulous thing in the kooky world of diplomacy. She may be making certain public statements to create one image while privately saying something else. I've long believed that President Bush and General Powell played a "good cop/bad cop" diplomatic game on some countries. I suspect that Dr. Rice is simply stepping into General Powell's "soft" or "good" cop role.

Dr. Rice's original expertise was in the Soviet Union, but the commentary gave no evidence to suggest that she wasn't qualified for the challenges of the Middle East. No matter who is Secretary of State, he or she will need to know about issues that are beyond his or her original training and primary area of expertise. The ability to sort information, evaluate people who are giving advice, and filter the recommendations in light of the people involved is the skill that is needed. No one gave evidence that Dr. Rice can't do that job.

You've got to learn how to read mediot droppings. First, let's pull out all anonymously sourced info, leaving us with this version of the article:

Dump Condi: [Some People allegedly] in revolt over Mideast policy
[Revolt implies that they are part of the team, which they are not, so it's the wrong term]

...conservatives, who include Newt Gingrich, [and] Richard Perle ...have urged the president to transfer Miss Rice out of the State Department and to an advisory role. They said Miss Rice, stemming from her lack of understanding of the Middle East, has misled the president on Iran and the Arab-Israeli conflict.

"We are sending signals today that no matter how much you provoke us, no matter how viciously you describe things in public, no matter how many things you're doing with missiles and nuclear weapons, the most you'll get out of us is talk," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said.

Miss Rice served as Mr. Bush's national security adviser in his first term. During his second term, Miss Rice replaced Mr. Powell in the wake of a conclusion by the White House that Mr. Bush required a loyalist to head the State Department and ensure that U.S. foreign policy reflected the president's agenda.

Mr. Gingrich ... said Miss Rice's inexperience and lack of resolve were demonstrated in the aftermath of the North Korean launch of seven short-, medium-, and intermediate-range missiles in July. He suggested that Miss Rice was a key factor in the lack of a firm U.S. response. "North Korea firing missiles," Mr. Gingrich said. "You say there will be consequences. There are none. We are in the early stages of World War III. Our bureaucracies are not responding fast enough. We don't have the right attitude."

A leading public critic of Miss Rice has been Richard Perle, a former chairman of the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board and regarded as close to Mr. Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Mr. Perle, pointing to the effort by the State Department to undermine the Reagan administration’s policy toward the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, has accused Miss Rice of succumbing to a long-time State Department agenda of meaningless agreements meant to appease enemies of the United States.

"Condoleezza Rice has moved from the White House to Foggy Bottom, a mere mile or so away," Mr. Perle wrote in a June 25 Op-Ed article in the Washington Post that has been distributed throughout conservative and national security circles. "What matters is not that she is further removed from the Oval Office; Rice's influence on the president is undiminished. It is, rather, that she is now in the midst of—and increasingly represents—a diplomatic establishment that is driven to accommodate its allies even when (or, it seems, especially when) such allies counsel the appeasement of our adversaries."

Mr. Perle's article was said to have reflected the views of many of Mr. Bush's appointees in the White House, Defense Department and State Department. Mr. Perle maintains close contacts to U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, Undersecretary of State for Arms Control Robert Joseph, Deputy National Security Advisor Elliot Abrams and Mr. Cheney's national security adviser, John Hannah.

"Rice attempted to increase pressure on Israel to stand down and to demonstrate restraint," said Stephen Clemons, director of the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation. "The rumor is that she was told flatly by the prime minister's office to back off."

I see there are some rumors and pure speculation in there, so next posting I'll remove those, too...

Yeah, Newt's thinking he's running against HER in 2008.

I bet her "urged the president" on national TV, because I bet he hasn't talked to Bush in months, if not years.

To call Rice or Powell an "affirmative action nominee" is the height of ignorance, to say nothing of a bit of racism.

I'd have to disagree. Since Gulf War I, Powell has been unimpressive—kind of a desk pilot. And wasn't it his genius idea to let Saddam go the first time? His disloyalty after leaving the Administration smacks of the entitlement disease I associate with affirmative-action babies, who rightly feel they can't be criticized.

Miss Rice seems to have the State Department disease, despite my hopes to the contrary. And I'm sorry, having a woman represent you in international negotiations just seems weak.

Because the Republican Party is a party of ideas and conservative philosophies, not gender and race politics. If Rice embodies and acts on the right politics then she is good, if she is a token, she has to go.

Version # 4, with all quotes that do not specifically refer to Condi but could be taken to refer to just the State Dept, for example, are removed [NOte thatquotes attributed to Newt in this article do not demonstrate he was singling out Condi as opposed to the State Dept in general]:

Dump Condi: Some People Disagree Mideast policy

Miss Rice served as Mr. Bush's national security adviser in his first term. During his second term, Miss Rice replaced Mr. Powell.

"Condoleezza Rice has moved from the White House to Foggy Bottom, a mere mile or so away," Mr. Perle wrote in a June 25 Op-Ed article in the Washington Post. [This article's starting to look quite a bit different now]
