I suspect that nicotine addiction is less the problem in the case of cigarettes. I think it's the chemicals the tobacco companies lace them with which is the harder part of the habit to kick. Nicotine in an of itself shouldn't be that addictive, just look at some people who smoke a cigar now and then.
my understanding is that nicotine causes the adrenals to release adrenalin, and that the 'rush' 'of relief from need) is caused by the adrenalin.....meaning that the true addiction is the adrenalin

It's not a problem. I had to quit in April because of a severe lung infection. It wasn't hard to quit at all. What is HARD is getting your metabolism to work again. Five pounds? That might be so for a 30 year old, but the older you get the more pounds you pile on. I've been fighting it for months now and although I stopped the gain by strict dieting and a LOT of exercise, I haven't been able to take off the pounds that piled on.
Not sure if you have ever been a smoker but psychological addiction is just as strong as the physical. Thus the high failure rate of people (myself included) who have tried the nicotine patches and the other junk.
Argue all you want but there are people who just plain enjoy smoking just as there are people who enjoy anchovies...........
