Some conditions merely require more discipline than others

Exactly. We all have to exercise (no pun intended) self-discipline.

Those who don't, become alcoholics, drug addicts, criminals, liberals, obese....you name it.

Self discipline is disappearing at about the same rate as the increase in the number of people who are seriously overweight.

Many times I have been behind a fat woman in the checkout line and noticed all the icecream, cookies, cakes, candy, etc. being purchased and her sucking on an open bottle of a non-diet soft drink like her life depended on it. Now there's self discipline for you.

I was once in a local Subway, and a truly, morbidly obese woman came in, and ordered six whole subs, carefully considering and choosing the different bread and toppings. She paid, sat down and ate them all. I was wondering if I was witnessing some strange misinterpretation of all those "Subway Diet" commercials, only to see her arise, go back to the counter, and enquire about the cookies, wondering if they were "moist." Apparently they were.

The place to be is the Rochester, NH Market Basket on welfare day in Maine, six miles away. I call it the Waltz of the Elephants, from "Fantasia".

The hippo style is in among the woman, high starch food in the Basket, lots of milk for the Coffee Brandies, the man of the moment follows up and buys the no name beer, by the case, and butts by the carton, they have cases stacked up to meet the demand, keeps the tax rate down, for us.
