There don't appear to be many fully automatic rifles in the inner cities where they're most likely to be used if available, and I have a hard time thinking that's a bad thing.
I'm a member of the NRA and own many guns myself. I'd prefer that fully automatic rifles be highly restricted in this country.
I'm a member of BMW Car Club of America and own many vehicles myself. I'd prefer that high speed cars (that go over 65 MPH) be highly restricted in this country.
Are you seeing the problem in your arguement? Fast cars kill ALOT more people IN ONE DAMN DAY than all illegal machine guns have since 1933.
"I'm a member of the NRA and own many guns myself. I'd prefer that fully automatic rifles be highly restricted in this country."
I agree totally. Only sane adults who do not have a criminal record should be allowed to have one.

If automatic rifles were banned, I'd be disappointed, since they're fun to shoot and a law banning them would be unconstitutional. However, it's comforting to know that a well-trained, well-disciplined citizen with a semi-automatic weapon is more than a match for an undisciplined thug with an automatic rifle.
BTW, Michael Moore, in his anti-gun film Bowling for Columbine, also claimed to be an NRA member. I think he even claimed to be a life member.
That's fine, my point being that cops shouldn't expect any special treatment for gun violations they commit as private citizens, i.e. personal ownership of machine guns.
Why? The semi auto weapons you own are much more likely to be the kind used in a violent crime than a full auto weapon. Maybe the owners of the full auto weapons should be allowed to keep theirs, while you are forced to surrender yours? No, that wouldn't work, not for me at least. I have a substantial collection of thundersticks myself.
By the way, did you know that statistically, you are more likely to die by drowning in a swimming pool than from a gun shot? How about restricting those dangerous swimming pools?
I also am a member of the NRA and I see no reason to treat machine guns different than any other. You do realize they are legal to own in all but 12 states.

No believer in the 2nd Amendment, then?
Well, you got your wish. Feel safer now?
BUt I want you to think about something. If someone intent to do so can smuggle in a few hundred pounds of marijuana or cocaine, it should be a breeze to get a few fully automatic rifles past the drug dogs.
Criminals don't give a d@mn about the law--they will get what they want. The law only restricts the people least likely to create mayhem.
As for me, I'd like to see the NFA of '34 and every gun law since repealed. ymmv
The problem is that while I'm OK with preventing felons and those suffering from mental illness being prohibited from owning them, I think someone like me, a law abiding responsible adult, should be able to walk into a shop and buy one. The political reality is, as soon as you allow any sort of restriction whatsoever, the gun banners will use it as an excuse to never let anyone have one.
When was the last time a concealed carry permit was issued to a private citizen in the state of NJ?
Do you know what the original intent of the 2nd Amendment is?
