Harper understands the issue correctly, but the left in Canada is going to have a field day with this incident.

Harper is full of crap on this one. If he really felt that the observation post should not have been manned, then he should have recalled all Canadian forces serving in Lebanon. The real disgrace here is that the Canadian government (including the Prime Minister): 1) had no idea there were Canadian forces serving under the United Nations in Lebanon; or 2) knew there were Canadian forces serving in Lebanon under U.N. command, but had so completely abdicated all authority over the country's military forces that they no longer had any day-to-day knowledge of what these military personnel were doing over there.

Well in fairness it should be pointed out that there was only one Canadian person in the entire UNIFIL force, and that one person happened to be among the ones killed.

So as far as whether Harper should have had day-to-day knowledge as to what was going on with this lone Canadian person in the UNIFIL force, trying to figure out when to second guess the UN command on pulling or not pulling out this person, well it was probably the case that he and the military are focusing more on Afghanistan or other situations involving more than a single Canadian person.
