Canadian killed from UN force complained his position shielding Hizbullah

Canadian killed from UN force complained his position shielding Hizbullah Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 26 July 2006

"...the tragic loss of a soldier yesterday who I happen to know and I think probably is from my Regiment. We've received e-mails from him a few days ago and he described the fact that he was taking within - in one case - three meters of his position "for tactical necessity - not being targeted". Now that's veiled speech in the military and what he was telling us was Hizbullah fighters were all over his position and the IDF were (sic) targeting them and that's a favorite trick by people who don't have representation in the UN. They use the UN as shields knowing that they can't be punished for it."

Retired Canadian Major General Lewis MacKenzie interviewed on CBC Toronto radio 26 July 2006 For recording: http://cbc.ca/metromorning/media/20060726LMCJUL26.ram

The "peacekeepers" have no business staying in a combat zone.

Didn't they get any of those leaflets that the IDF dropped at the start of the fighting?

Call me a callous bastard, but I call 4 dead UN 'peacekeepers' a pretty good start.

Ok, I'll bite. You're comment does make you appear as a callous bastard. They were following orders. I'll save my anger (or callousness) for the UN, not soldiers doing their jobs.

Either that, or their cell phones were off.

Can you believe Israel making mass computorized phone calls? No one answers those. They should have humans call.

Kofi and wife Nan ...

I'm drawing a blank ... but this women has a remarkable resemblance to someone (here in the U.S - going back a few years) who is (was) a certifiable dingbat. Any suggestions?

No one answers those.

Greetings you could already be the winner of 72 virgins. All you must do is remain where you are and greet the invaders when they arrive.

Perhaps by now we are getting some idea of the enemy we face. At least I hope that is so, but I doubt it. We have become a country of sheep.

Your armed. Your surrounded by Hezbollah shooting at Israel. You are charged with keeping the Peace. (in sam kinison rant voice) Do your job! Shoot the Hezbollah! Then the Israelis won't have to shell your position.

I have absolutely no idea who she is, but I can confirm that she is a dingbat -- she married Kofi.

Just a thought.

The headline is completely misleading.

He said:

They use the UN as shields knowing that they can't be punished for it."

That should have been the headline.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1672871/posts

This is what he actually wrote:

"On July 18, he provided CTV.ca with an update of his mission via e-mail. He said a great deal of fighting was taking place near his post.

"(O)ur vantage point which has a commanding view of the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) positions on the Golan mountains to our east and the IDF positions along the Blue Line to our south, as well as, most of the Hezbollah static positions in and around our patrol base."

"It appears that the lion's share of fighting between the IDF and Hezbollah has taken place in our area."

He added that there had been numerous occasions when his post had come under fire, but wrote carefully to avoid revealing tactical information.

"What I can tell you is this: we have on a daily basis had numerous occasions where our position has come under direct or indirect fire from both artillery and aerial bombing," he wrote.

"The closest artillery has landed within two meters of our position and the closest 1000 lb aerial bomb has landed 100 meters from our patrol base."

See also this Canadian Press story as it appears in the Sun Media site:

UN observers asked Israel to stop bombing 10 times before post was hit: report

In particular note the closing paragraphs:

UN officials said Hezbollah militants had been operating in the area of the post, a routine tactic to prevent Israel from attacking them.

"We did repeatedly in recent days say (to Israel) that this was an exposed position, that Hezbollah militants were 500 metres away shielding themselves near UN workers and civilians," UN humanitarian chief Jan Egeland said. "That's why it is so inexplicable that what happened happened."

This means that the UN antis that, to its knowledge, Hezbollah was using this UN post as a shield.

Perhaps someone should commend to Annan and Egeland that they read the Geneva Conventions.

Until Harper mentioned the issue today, the media has failed utterly to ask this question:

Why were the UN personnel still in what had become a full combat zone a full fortnight after active belligerency had commenced?

Agreed.

The UN tells us to go fix Darfur while they play Baywatch in cammies somewhere else, but when violence erupts again where they are, this whole routine begins again.

So make that two callous bastards. :)

It is bad that innocent people died. These 4 do not make UN policy and risked their lives for an organization (the UN) which has zero credibility. The UN has given no reason at all for Israel to trust its impartiality or neutrality, and although that is not a reason to bomb it, it should be a clear warning to all who would volunteer for such a mission.

I would not be surprised if Hezbullah was hiding behind it, or even inside it. I read that the 4 observers went to an underground bunker for safety. It's possible that Hezbullah took shelter, either knowing or not that the UN men were in the shelter, when the IDF then struck at it.

Who knows what happened here, but it's absolute insanity that these unarmed men and women are being forced to sit literally in the middle of a battlefield. They should be evacuated immediately. There is no need for them to observe and report anything right now. In fact, "observing and reporting" makes them, in a way, a participant in the conflict as their transmissions can be intercepted by either side. They should go home now.
