Mexico's PAN Party ponders Lopez Obrador's remark declaring himself "President" (Translation)

So states César Nava, Adjutant Secretary General of the white and blue1, that this self-proclamation is in the style of Antonio López de Santa Ana.

The National Action Party (PAN) assured today that the statement of the presidential candidate of the For the Good of All coalition, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, given to the Univision channel:2 "Yes, I am the President of Mexico. I am the President of Mexico by the will of the majority," is "one more occurence of a messianic impudence."

César Nava Vázquez, Adjutant Secretary General of the PAN Party, said that this self-proclamation is "in the style of Antonio López de Santa Ana," and asserted that "a true democrat respects the Mexican majority, the electoral authorities, [and] the peaceful solution of conflicts."

He added in a press conference that "it is clear that Mr. Lopez Obrador insists in his longing, in his intention, and in the absence of the majority will to turn to a statement like this. A true democrat does not comport himself in the way he is doing, it is only out of necessity, so that his obsession that someone will name him President, that he named himself.

Nava said that for the PAN Party is it clear that Lopez Obrador "has now decided not to talk3 and we lament that very much."

Translator's Notes:

1The PAN Party is sometimes referred to by its colors, white and blue, or in Spanish blanquiazul.

2In an interview with Univision Lopez Obrador declared himself to be the "President of Mexico by the will of the majority." The Spanish language article giving the details is at: http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/notas/364801.html

3Over the past several days Lopez Obrador has repeatedly declared he is willing to enter into dialog with Felipe Calderon and the PAN Party, and Calderon and PAN responded positively to the offer, but Lopez Obrador insisted that the talks must be preconditioned upon Calderon and PAN accepting Lopez Obrador's call for a hand recount of all of the 41 million plus ballots cast in the presidential election. PAN has pointed out that decision is a matter that can only be handled under Mexican law by the Electoral Tribunal which is currently addressing the challenges Lopez Obrador and his coalition have submitted on a case by case basis and they are not moving to handle each of those challenges by a hand recount.

Well everyone, it's getting dangerous. The big PRD demonstration Lopez Obrador has called for this Sunday in Mexico City is on and it appears that AMLO has set the stage by declaring himself President of Mexico, even though the final decision of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Power of the Federation (TEPJF), which is the only body in Mexico that has the legal power to declare any winner of the Presidential Election, is still weeks away.

The TEPJF has been continuing its deliberations, and not in secret either, but they are addressing the many challenges Lopez Obrador and his coalition have submitted, along with others submitted by the PAN Party contesting some of AMLO's numbers, on a case-by-case basis and not by using the full hand recount of all the ballots Lopez Obrador has called for repeatedly. It is also clear that some of Calderon's challenges to AMLO's totals have been sustained.

While it is impossible to tell how the TEPJF's deliberations have changed the overall vote totals, and that cannot be known until they render their final report, it is becoming more and more evident that Calderon likely will be declared the eventual winner.

AMLO has evidently decided to declare the work of the TEPJF invalid before it is completed. Mexico is coming right up to the edge of a catastrophe. Sunday's demonstration is going to tell us a lot.

Well, StJacques, what do you think will happen? I have very little insight on this.

Others had predicted he would try to win this in the streets, and it looks like they were right.

Considering that he only got slightly more than a third of the vote, it takes a lot of nerve. But the Left is taking the gloves off these days. For the 60+ percent of Mexico that didn't vote for him, they had better stick together or its over. PRI needs to be clear whether they love Mexico more than they hate PAN. I believe they do.

"Geez, PRD rivals the lefty loon side here in our soil!"

To be fair to the Democraps (not that they deserve it), even they aren't this bad. The leftist scum in Mexico apparently WANT widespread violence in order to seize power. Even sKerry and Gore didn't go that far with their insanity...

Mexico is coming right up to the edge of a catastrophe.

If anyone deserves credit for it, it's Al Gore.
His disgusting behavour after losing in Florida
was a shining example to fanatics like Obrador,
that creating doubt about the electorial process
could pay off.

"Geez, PRD rivals the lefty loon side here in our soil! "

They are much worse Rose. While we can legitimately call many of the Liberals in this country "closet Socialists," some of AMLO's supporter will openly tell you that is exactly who they are.

Below is a photo of pro-AMLO demonstrators outside of Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute on July 6:

"...one more occurence of a messianic impudence..."

I like that phrase! It's perfect for Gore and Kerry...and Hillary, too! ;)

I think this is the best tactic -- compare him to Santa Ana! Now that's funny!

You may want to consider a vacation to Puerto Vallarta for a few days, things could get dicey. Stay safe down there...

I'll tell you after Sunday's demonstration in Mexico City CA. It's really difficult to tell. But I am about to put majority odds on violence unless I see something move in the other direction soon.

I am quite safe here in Lafayette, Louisiana Hoosier. I'm just tracking this for the board via the web.

But thanks for thinking of me!

I am thinking (and hoping) you are wrong. I have been reading editorials in Mexico nailing Obrador as being a whiner.

Having said that I know that his supporters are capable of violence but somehow I am counting on Mexico's greater grasp on stability ... or greater than most Latin American state's.

BunnySlippers, was this an exclamation of surprise at the content of the article or that I am in Louisiana?

I couldn't tell given its placement in the thread.
