If the rest of Europe had joined us this whole mess would be over now.
Phone calls to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi still remained unreturned at press time.

There are multiple justifications for the war in Iraq, but the newest one is that the presence of American troops on three sides of Iran and two sides of Syria guarantees that Israel's confrontation with Hezbollah won't grow into a wider war.
Perhaps a bit more "over reaching" against the appeasers objections would have started the war against Saddam PRIOR to the movements of WMD to the Bekaa valley. The current barrage of Hezbollah against Israel probably would never have happened...
That does not seem to have stopped liberal theorists from re-employing a somewhat discredited concept, and so they have. Imperial Overstretch: George W. Bush and the Hubris of Empire takes up where Kennedy left off and given the latest developments in the Middle East, is just as unfortunately timed. One is naturally a little suspicious of a book whose reviewers throw around cliches such as "foreign policy hijacked by the neocons" and "petro-military complex" but I thought I'd give it a look. Not a purchase, fortunately. Caveat emptor.
