He's not saying I'm some helpless idiot, he's simply showing respect!
Not to quibble, but he's showing good manners - what used to be called "common courtesy". Unfortunately, "common courtesy" isn't very common, anymore.
When I hold a door, whether it be for a woman OR a man, it is rare to get a simple "thank you", much less any acknowledgement at all. That's not a bash on women, just a statement that, as a society, we're not as polite or courteous as we once were.
