The mission of the Cyber Crimes Unit is to provide a safe electronic environment for the communication of information and ideas, and for the transaction of commerce. The Office of the Attorney General is committed to protecting the Internet for children and families, as a safe place to learn and shop.

The Cyber Crimes Unit brings together police officers and prosecutors with expertise in investigating and prosecuting high-tech crimes.

Predator Cases: The Attorney General's office is actively pursuing predatory pedophiles who use the Internet to develop relationships with children for the purpose of luring them to a meeting.

Child Pornography: The Attorney General's office accepts complaints and conducts investigations into online child pornography. Cyber Crimes Unit staff work with local, state, and federal authorities to prosecute crimes involving child pornography.

Children's Privacy: A new federal law, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), seeks to protect the privacy of children online. The Cyber Crimes Unit will monitor Web sites and take enforcement actions against those who are not in compliance with the Act.

Breach of Computer Security: The Attorney General's office accepts complaints and conducts investigations into violations of the Texas Breach of Computer Security Statute, Texas Penal Code, Section 33.02. The Cyber Crimes Unit staff will work with local, state, and federal authorities to prosecute crimes involving malicious and damaging computer intrusions in violation of this statute.
